Essential details in active infrastructure design includes lighting. Unfortunately most of our paths in North America are draped in darkness, but to provide a basic layer of safety for everyone, our underpasses should be well lit.

“Traffic lights across the city were down, seemingly confusing the driverless cars —& halting them in their tracks. Riders and pedestrians posted videos of Waymos stuck at intersections, long lines of drivers behind them.”

Less well known— driverless cars contribute to traffic congestion EVERY day.

My answer is always the same.

What I am, is determined.

It turns out vehicular traffic does something else, too, more subtle but equally pernicious: It changes the way children see and experience the world by diminishing their connection to community and neighbors.

Due to lax regulations and enforcement, the driver of this SUV could hit and injure or kill someone and then choose to drive away without their license plate being easily readable.

This is not uncommon. It's everywhere. Car culture has no accountability or guard rails.

Cars are a lot slower than people think. This driver commutes at 4 MPH. That's barely faster than walking (avg walking pace is around 3.3 MPH)

They could cut their commute to 15 minutes biking at 12 MPH, but they might not have a safe route to do so

We are forcing people into terrible car commutes
