@indie88toronto.bsky.social asking an llm is the same as going to buzzfeed for a gift idea, except buzzfeed paid writers, had editors, the products existed in the world (because they had ad budget), and it wasn't building new data centers or burning through water and energy at an unsustainable rate

Amazon is helping fund a $300 million build of a ballroom for the White House.

Independent bookstores are donating to food banks and organizations that help with food insecurity.

They are not the same.

My hot take is that none of these are structure. These are all recipes that describe structure.

Structure is the Salt, Fat, Acid Heat of writing.

3-Act/Hero's Journey etc are recipes.

You can make great meals without using a recipe if you understand the principles of structure.
So #WritingCommunity how do we feel about structure?

Do you use the 3 act structure? The 5 act?

Hero's Journey? Save the Cat? Super Structure Method? Story Genius Method?

Something else?

What have you got?

just finished 'Stuff & Money' by @rlspang.bsky.social and partway through @adapalmer.bsky.social 'Inventing the Renaissance', both which are great reminders that the history I was taught might be heavily influenced by centuries old political talking points (now to reread Pratchett's Making Money)

I don't even have cats (my roses are my honorary cats), and this is still true
I am increasingly sick and tired of businesses trying to force me to install their proprietary apps! My phone is full! Let me print my boarding pass at the airport! Let me get a posted paper schedule for the con! YOU ARE NOT MORE IMPORTANT THAN 5,000 PICTURES OF MY CATS!

Like most people, I grew up believing luddite meant "regressive" or "anti-technology" but actually the luddites were professionals, artisans and craftspeople, and they were upset about machines taking away not just their jobs, but also the art of the work they produced. Sound familiar?

“Please send us emails instead” means “we can put key words from your script on our corporate spam filter and ignore you, but calls shut down our entire contact infrastructure”

Keep fucking calling.
LMAO I called Visa’s customer support service - the guy on the other line was like “are you ALSO calling about the video game payment processing? Please send us emails instead.”

Keep up the calls, folks, we’re definitely gumming up their works
I know we're upset about itch, but they're not the only ones

Payment processors harassed companies bc of a 1,000 email hate campaign

But we can EASILY top 1,000!

I prewrote an email + got the contact info - you just have to send!

Censorship is 1/4 law, 1/4 culture-attitudes-customs, 1/4 technology, and 1/4 money.

Where tech & money overlap to silence things, they have a ton of power to censor, even if the law is uninvolved.

Having the abstract legal right to say X doesn’t help if tech+money means saying X bankrupts you.
Valve just updated their Steam rules to ban content that “may violate rules set by payment processors or banks.” Sounds boring. It’s not. It’s the quiet normalization of financial censorship and it’s going to hurt LGBTQ+ games and devs

If "AI" was as valuable as they say it is, they wouldn't be selling it to you. They'd be using it themselves in secret to make the next Minecraft, the next Avatar, the next Hello Kitty and then they'd sell that to you.

They're trying to sell you a sick goose, while pretending it lays golden eggs.
