FINALLY a newspaper publishes a proper investigative piece about Unbound, which dissolved earlier this year owing writers and readers vast sums of money (£20,000+ in my case), after a long period of false promises, incompetence, late payments and vagueness. observer.co.uk/news/busines...

The Observer takes on the collapse of Unbound - some truly shocking allegations, almost all of which I have seen compelling evidence of as a member of the Unbound author WhatsApp group and through my own experience of being published by them observer.co.uk/news/busines...

It's notable that ex Unbound CEO Dan Kieran, ex Unbound MD Kate Boulton and ex Unbound CEO Wil (one "l") Harris have stayed silent about why Unbound (despite heaps of crowdfunded cash) failed & shat all over its authors. Dan, Kate & Wil: many authors & readers would love to hear your side of things.

THREAD. There was a time when I didn't know what people meant when they said "gut feeling". These days I do. What's more, gut feelings are something I have learned to trust. This time last year I was about to release a novel I'd loved writing and was very proud of. Yet I felt deeply uneasy. But why?

What Unbound’s demise has shown, to a quite alarming degree, is how little tangible, active advocacy is available to authors in this situation, say the authors affected by the collapse of Unbound in our recent Comment piece 👇 #BookSky

Being part of the whole Unbound saga has not been fun; one consolation has been the support of the many other authors involved.
And so, in that spirit, we've put together a list of some of the great books that now need publishers and agents. Please do share!

Great to hear @dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social Tom Cox talking about the Unbound scandal on BBC Radio 4 at lunchtime. Most authors earn a pittance from their work, but the way Unbound’s authors have been treated is shocking. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

This is a really interesting thread bigging up some of the publishers who writers have had great experiences with…
So, now that Unbound/Boundless has shat the bed...what small/micro presses do we trust?

Exactly this ⬇️⬇️⬇️
It seems incredible that Unbound managed to fail with a model that *looked* foolproof.
Every book Unbound sent to print, until last year, was already profitable. The crowdfund covered the print run and distribution costs.

It was extremely low-risk, which is why it's so frustrating that they took on high-risk projects with our money and lost it all.

I discovered yesterday, in a mass email sent at 3am, that I will not be receiving the roughly £40,000 that my publisher Unbound/Boundless owes me for pre-order sales of The Paradox Paradox. The payment for five years of work, gone.

Am absolutely furious. Yesterday, @unboundsocials.bsky.social were meant to deliver statements to all their authors (many of whom are owed a great deal of money). They didn't. It's the latest in an abysmal series of broken promises. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Scj0...

Unbound did precisely fuck-all PR for my book when it came out, despite promises. Didn't even send copies to the obvious people. It was a Brexit satire. Easiest sell on earth at the time.

I wouldn't piss on Archna Sharma and John Mitchinson if they were on fire. Avoid their revived Boundless brand.

If you've ever supported a book from Unbound you probably have an email in your inbox from Boundless Publishing, their new incarnation, touting for pledges. Do not give them your money – they owe authors and supporters thousands. In fact, unsubscribe, and let's make them pariahs.
Re my previous skeet, Boundless (publisher previously known as Unbound) are today soliciting for pledges via email, so if you're on their mailing list, read this before giving them your money.
