In response to my rant yesterday, I was asked how we can make better parks and other public places for teenage girls? What do they want? I have answers to this, so now a positive 🧵.
Starting in Sweden, where this was co-designed by teenage girls.
Frizon shelter - a curved space with seats like swings and lovely coloured perspex in the roof and a view of the city of Umeå at dusk. Two teenage girls sit in one of the swing seats having a chat.

Important to be clear here that the proposed homes wouldn't mean demolishing the 18th century garden - it's just that they might possibly be visible from it. What appallingly selfish behaviour.

DAD: Hi - do you have an activity trail, for the kids? 3 NT EMPLOYEE: Of course – you’re just in time for the Autumn Gammon Trail! 4 MUM: That sounds fun, doesn’t it kids? 5 NT EMPLOYEE [handing an activity sheet and pencils to the kids]: Every autumn, the Reform Trust gammons flock back to the National Trust for the AGM. Just follow the trail round the grounds, and see how many you can spot! 6 NT EMPLOYEE [hearing something in the gardens]: Listen - that's their call [Calls emanating from the landscape]: tut-tut woke-woke 7 NT EMPLOYEE [showing the family an apparently empty fenced enclosure with some bushes in]: They are extremely sensitive and fragile... But you can bring them out of hiding if you put a little sign down mentioning slavery. 8 KIDS [pointing]: There they are! [Some little red faced PEOPLE wearing Barbour jackets and gilets emerge cautiously from the bushes. They are creeping towards a TINY SIGN in the middle of the enclosure]. Food safety improved massively when we all gained access to a fridge. One way of measuring this is the steep decline of stomach cancer rates. Give your fridge a hug the next time you are in the kitchen.

If you were born in UK prior to 1980 most polite families taught their kids to call all women who knew your mother and were at least 20 years older than you "auntie" regardless of whether they were related to you or not.

This would include next door neighbours or friends of your grandmother.

Such a no-brainer, it’s remarkable that more cities HAVEN’T done the same.
Paris said au revoir to cars. Air pollution maps reveal a dramatic change.

The fuss over who appears in TV adverts misses the point...
Adverts aren't meant to be a mirror of society, but to reflect the advertiser's openness to society as a whole. A photo of 10 people, including one in a wheelchair, doesn't say 10% of the UK are in wheelchairs, but it does signify that people in wheelchairs are welcome at the venue. Likewise adverts showing men as nursery teachers, women as builders, Asian people down the pub etc -- it's saying "you're welcome here, join us". And yes, that means including black people in adverts shown in parts of the UK where they are a minority. Too often we hear that people grew up avoiding something because they never saw people like them doing it -- and adverts that show the diversity of society fix that visibility problem by saying "yes, you can do this if you want". Isn't that a good thing?
