I'm just resharing this again for the various #historians and #academics who are returning to work today or next week. If you have students working on #publichistory or similar topics, this event at the @ihr.bsky.social might be of real interest to them (and you)! Feel free to share it around!
Following the publication of ‘Star Wars: The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire’ Dr Ann-Marie Foster, @juliarsct.bsky.social, and myself will be discussing its approach to ‘Writing Fictional History’ at the @ihr.bsky.social on 26 February 2025.

My dad's #footballshirt #kitcommunity #kitcollector luck continues thanks to surpriseshirts.co.uk with the Cagliari 24/25 home shirt. Considering we couldn't get one when in Cagliari last year

I've got Racing Club de Monteviedo 2022 away which is also their 2024 3rd shirt. Interesting 🤣

It’s the time of year for mentioning one of my favourite ‘untranslatables’.

‘Poronkusema’, in Finnish, once denoted a distance of around 7.5km, which is roughly how long a reindeer can last before needing to urinate. ‘Poronkusema’ means ‘reindeer pee’.

One for #kitcollectors #footballshirtcolllectors especially those that byy and sell.

HMRC just clarified and updated their rules. Especially if you sell on Ebay or Vinted.

One thing I really missed and am grateful for 🦋 sky for is being able to engage , debate, and discuss history and archaeology with others properly again.

The other place became a disaster for many reasons.

Had a really enjoyable healthy discussion today on some #maritimehistory #history #ww2

One for the #writers #writingcommunity and #booksky community. If one publisher is highlighting and recommending this can't be long before the rest do as well. Also be aware of the new twitter policies.
Today, my publisher put out a notice encouraging all of their authors to leave Twitter/X due to Musk's copyright complaints arbitration policies (through courts in Texas) and AI scraping.

Looks like I may have to close up there sooner rather than later.

Good thing I've been on Bluesky for awhile.

How long would your commute take in 1680? Mine would be about a day and a half.

@camunicampop.bsky.social has a brilliant tool for calculating travel times in Roman, 1680, 1830, 1911 and 2024. 🗃️

Another reason things are so much better here than Twitter.

One of the outrageously important runic inscriptions on the Viking-style Galloway Hoard, deposited c. 900 in what is now SW Scotland.

The exciting kicker is that the runes are ANGLIAN, not Old Norse, likely made by an Anglo-Saxon Northumbrian.

My images from the Treasure Trove in Scotland viewing.

Seeing the England vs Ireland score. A quote from Patrick Harper comes to mind "God save Ireland"

Of course as Sharpe says he is to busy/hands full with the Spanish.

Love this. ‘Queue’ is from the French word with the same spelling (but pronounced as ‘kuh’) meaning an animal’s long tail.

In the 18th and 19th centuries it also referred to a pigtail and was sometimes spelled as ‘cue’, which gave us the name of the long thin rod used in snooker.
the “ueue” in “queue” is really just there as an example

Something lovely for the weekend!

Beautiful blue glass beads from the late Bronze Age.

Ploughed up by a farmer in Denmark in 1885, analysis shows the beads were made in Mesopotamia, pointing to long-distance trade in luxury goods some 3,000 years ago.
