πŸͺ© It's Friday, let's play music & dance! Look at this stunning terracotta vase by the so-called Berlin painter of a young man singing and playing a kithara, c. 490 BC.

πŸ”Ž Note how the cloth below the instrument sways gently πŸƒ.

πŸ’  Mourning angels in the fresco 'Lamentation' by Giotto (1305), Scrovegni Chapel, Padua.

Giotto was particularly strong in expressing the physicality of sorrow. Look at all the different expressions and hand gestures.

Definitely not a Bad Bunny! 🐰 Young Hare by Albrecht Dürer, 1502.

πŸ”¦ Note the warm golden light that hits the hare from the left. πŸ‘οΈ Take a close look for a reflection of the window frame in the hare's eye!

πŸͺ© Let’s dance! For Ambrogio Lorenzetti (as later for Matisse), when people move together in a circle they portray an image of social well-being that follows from communal freedom & justice.

Note the 9️⃣ dancers!

🐦 Bird’s-eye view of Siena.

In the heart is Piazza del Campo (β€œIl Campo”) which is divided into 9 scallop shell-shaped sections. This is symbolic of the rule of β€˜The Nine’: Siena was led by a "Council of Nine" known at the time as β€œIl Buon Governo”.

βš’οΈ Ever heard of β€˜graffito’? It’s an old technique where the design of a mosaic is traced on white marble slabs using a chisel & a drill and then filled in with black stucco.

🦁 For #caturday a fresco of The Creation of the Animals by Raphael (1518-19) in Raphael's Loggia, Palazzo Apostolico.

Odd how there are many parts of animals visible (see the heads of the horse and dog f.e.) - still in the midst of being created?
