There was a theory I heard Alan Moore talk about in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (I THINK) where James Bond isn't a man but a title given to different spies throughout the organization.

My idea to reboot Bond is to do a VENTURE BROS. riff on TRAINING DAY. An earnest satire about everything wrong with Bond in modern times that still celebrates the potential of Bond through the eyes of a young protag.
James Bond wouldn't be an official code name, but a name chosen by John at the end

My pitch: embrace the code name idea to a degree. Older James Bond takes on a younger partner, a John Doe orphan of the state, selected at an early age for the agency.
John idolizes Bond but eventually sees he's become the villain and kills him. He takes the name to become what Bond should be.
