In my old town the GOP had run basically without serious challenge for decades. A bunch of us "millennials" joined the local Dem party and basically asked to help.
We were running it in a year. Within 4 years we had a majority of town seats flipped Dem. A FAR more progressive Dem than old party

“Rather than taking over the Democratic Party the same way the right took over the Republican Party, we should take the easier route and just start up a new party ourselves!”
I’m about to fill my pockets with stones and walk into the sea.

Just now: The plaintiffs who were arguing that Utah GOP's congressional map is illegal won in court.
The judge orders one of the two maps submitted by the plaintiffs ('map 1') be used.
The ruling, if it stands, guarantees that Democrats will pick up a congressional seat in Utah next year.

The refrain used to be that there's no point switching to renewables while China is pouring out pollution. Now China is leading the world in renewable energy, and Trump's US is lagging far behind. In another three years of his term, it will be impossible to catch up.

Solar’s price drop is astonishing: panels are now 98% cheaper than when I first analyzed them in 2004.
Today, building a fence with solar can be cheaper than using wood.

Is the United States really about to touch the stove on insurance? Like are we really about to fuck this whole thing up, as a country?

It is *not possible* to have pre-existing conditions protection without some sort of system like the ACA in place. i mean, technically it is, but you end up with obscene premiums that no one can pay (which is what’s happening now)

Once you accept this, the question is whether you want a vestigial private in name only insurance system to administer things, or a fully nationalized system, or something in between. But you are not getting something resembling a real market.

at the end of the day, market insurance cannot provide insurance for sick people. It isn’t because insurers are greedy (though they are); it’s because every insurer would go bankrupt.

The basic problem of health insurance: if you want sick people to be able to get insurance, then the insurance product ceases to be traditional insurance, bc the insurer cannot price risk. Once you accept that sick people should get insurance, you must accept some variety of a socialized system.
Rick Scott told me his plan would be to take all of the remaining ACA subsidies and redistribute them to HSA accounts and people can then buy whatever insurance a state certifies. Basically a repeal/replace.
He denied when I asked wouldn’t that create two-tiered system where sick pay much more…

Hot take: while I am very in favor of improving plant based options on the market and reducing the amount of unsustainable meat consumption for climate reasons, I think ideologically motivated vegans who want to eliminate it entirely are low key ecofash/malthusian adjacent and I do not trust them.

if you genuinely think Schumer and Democratic leadership opposed this & Republicans coincidentally got exactly the number of votes they needed to avoid a filibuster and none of those votes are from Democratic Senators who are up for reelection in the midterms next year, I have a bridge to sell you.

Conscripts in the Russian military aren't sent to Ukraine, it's part of why there's such little pushback over the war domestically.
