I think ACA was a good ask and it's surprising and revealing that GOP refused, but yeah everyone mad about the deal is forgetting how at the outset there was a lot of "what should be the ask," some things that are in the deal were held up as more important than the subsidies bsky.app/profile/nute...
Weird how at some point the ACA subsidies went from meaningless technocrat babble that it was obviously incredibly stupid for Democrats to try protecting to being incredibly important for helping people avoid suffering.

And Democrats managed to get it wrong both times!! What were the odds?

yesss i wish people knew this about food banks. almost all of them accept money, and they can do way more with it than they can with a can of food!

spoke with the executive director of my local food bank today and got this really incredible line: "if you donate 1 can of green beans, we can give away 1 can of green beans. but if you donate a dollar, we can give away 6 cans of green beans"

When I watch a Godzilla, superhero, or Transformers film, I’m always thinking about the financial, logistical, and economic hurdles of the destruction.

Who pays to rebuild Chicago after it’s been leveled in a Transformers movie?

we should not be locking up land in "affordable" deed restrictions like this, this is so much worse than just allowing market-rate housing. Do you really want to have to fill out a need-based application policed by a non-profit scammer company in order to buy or rent housing bsky.app/profile/maxd...
A single person making $82,000 a year should not need a subsidized apartment. A family making $117,000 should be able to buy a home.

We need to build more homes until median rent is less than 30% of median monthly income and median home prices are less than 4x median annual income.

The thing to understand about this is that this catastrophe in the UK has redounded to the political benefit of the very same people and political movement that pushed for it! Extremely perverse.
I wonder if the United States can learn anything from the last time a major industrialized country decided to isolate itself from the rest of the world?

Almost a decade after the Brexit vote, GDP in the UK is around 6-8% lower relative to peer countries. (Source: www.nber.org/papers/w34459)

I'm not really a fan of this thing where we calculate interest over the life of the loan, that's not really how you should decide if it's worth it. But yeah the actual reduction in monthly payment is not that impressive bsky.app/profile/jess...
Let's say you take out a $400,000 mortgage loan at 6.25% - and choose a 50-year mortgage instead of 30 years.

In return for saving $283 monthly, you will pay an extra $421,302 in interest over the life of the loan.

Or if you sell at 15 years, will have paid down just $29,000 in equity. Not good.
INGRAHAM: Is a 50 year mortgage really a good idea?

TRUMP: It's not even a big deal. You go from 40 to 50 years. All it means is you pay less per month

someone should do a study on signature matching for in-person vs mail-in ballots. I'll bet signatures are basically never rejected in person (too intimidating) but are unreasonably common for mail-in (same issue as IRB reviews, existence of the process makes people drum up reasons to use it)

I do think "AI model parameters are just a lossy data encoding format" is a hugely underrated take. Even the people involved in building these things do not seem to realize how much data can be encoded (even without loss) with this many parameters bsky.app/profile/anth...
your honor, the user prompted the computer to unzip the archive, which was a statistical representation of the entire training folder.

any owner of a specific file within the zip has no claim against us, but only the user who opened it
“OpenAI argued its AI models didn’t store/copy specific training data but, rather, reflected what they learned based on the entire training data set. Since the output was generated as a result of user inputs (prompts), it wasn’t the defendants, but the respective user who would be liable for it.”
