There's a big argument to be made that Trumpism is a revolt of America's hereditary elites who are apoplectic that the beginnings of a true meritocracy threatened to replace some of them.
The difference between the sociopathic and non-sociopathic takes is really quite stark

Congress’s shutdown deal eliminated key food safety rules, blocking agencies from enforcing measures to prevent contamination and trace outbreaks. This rollback has coincided with a surge in hospitalizations and deaths from foodborne illnesses.

And now we have this.

They called them Near Abroad Direct Action Operations, NADA Ops. The "joke" in the CalSec cafeterias, which made its way out later in the hearings was that "What does the operator say when asked if there are civilians in the area? Nada...oops!". Even decades later, Arizona didn't find it funny.

the last few years of my job at google were surreal -- watching the executives talk in increasingly positive terms about Elon Musk's management style while objective metrics at his companies were becoming dangerously unstable. it wasn't until 2023 that i realized that they didn't care about profits.

If you live in California, call the governor's office and tell him to sign SB 79 into law.

A bunch of toxic LA NIMBYs are whining about SB 79, the amazing housing bill the CA legislature passed recently.

It's on the governor's desk, and reportedly he's getting cold feet. Hey @gavinnewsom.bsky.social, please have some spine on the most important issue in your state. Just sign it.

More than 1800 detainees are missing after the closure of Alligator Alcatraz. Their families and lawyers can’t find them and they’ve vanished from the ICE database. Feels like this should be a much bigger story www.miamiherald.com/news/local/i...
Hundreds of Alligator Alcatraz detainees drop off the grid after leaving site
As of the end of August, the whereabouts of two-thirds of more than 1,800 men detained at Alligator Alcatraz during the month of July could not be determined by the Miami Herald.

People like to think that politicians talk about issues because people care about them. It’s often the reverse.
During both Obama elections, crime was not a major campaign issue. The refocus on crime in the last decade is a backlash to the focus on police brutality (we're basically a little over a decade post-Ferguson) combined with the fact people's baselines have been reset from the 80s and 90s.
Things like 75% of American voters believe are just ontologically true:

1. Crime is always going up at all times
2. Democrats are "soft on crime"

Democratic strategists somehow look at that and conclude that they need to look tough on crime even though it literally *cannot* work

I am grieving the barbarism that is going to unfurl from all this. People are going to die. Livelihoods gone. All to feed a corrupt kleptocracy.

I see every day up close how different it is from the first time around. There are no guardrails. A disaster. I’m sorry we have to live through this.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

there is a high-dimensional object that describes all existing seinfeld episodes perfectly and with minimal length. if you add random noise to this object you can get seinfeld episodes that do not exist. seinfeld-ness is sufficiently specific that nothign else overlaps this region
"there exists a rigorous mathematical description of the commonalities between every Seinfeld episode sufficient to reconstruct new episodes recognizable as instances of the genre" is an indisputable and bizarre fact at this point, even if the episodes reconstructed in this way are bad.
this is where ive been. it's insane that when chatgpt generates you a sitcom dialogue it can only do it bc its extracted a principal component vector for the concept "sitcom", and done so from what words appear next to each other. several insane implications there even if the result is a bad sitcom!
