My students have known since the first day of class, in September, that the final was due today at 5 pm EST. I have shared this info regularly. It’s on Canvas. It’s not a surprise. I just got an email that put me through the roof. I love these kids but sometimes I am tested.

Most people are allergic to believing they got something partially because of luck. Especially when we frame it as an arbiter of brilliance.

Have to go into office tomorrow and I can’t sleep. Don’t rely on melatonin, people! Makes it terrible to fall asleep when you don’t use it.

Have there been any critiques of the Culture of Honor work? So much of cultural psych has just been dominated by the individualism/collectivism work (and corresponding criticisms).

Watched Final Destination tonight and it was really good. Wasn’t as gory as I had expected. I would recommend.

Many of us have heard of Hofstede's cultural dimensions (e.g. the individualistic-collectivist (IC) dimension), but few have looked under the hood of how they were constructed. The data, it turns out, come from self-report surveys of IBM employees ca. 1968-72. Here's McSweeney describing the sample:

I also wish places didn’t just opt for Instagram to post their specials/deals. Just use your website.

Going to try posting more. It’s been awhile since I’ve had Instagram. Deleted back in December. The one thing I really miss is being able to see new local spots near me.

These articles are infuriatingly dumb. This woman got upset because Harvard issued a totally reasonable and frankly neutral statement about equity and giving a damn about others, she runs to UATX and they fire her wah wah wah. The fragility that has brought us to ruin is so embarrassing. Grow up!

New post! Should we hold back criticisms of scientific practices for fear that they will be weaponized by political attacks on science? Absolutely not. We need to recognize the distinction between scientific arguments and ideological arguments. getsyeducated.substack.com/p/science-re...

I appreciate that APS names "rising stars" to honor ECRs who are having a positive impact. I would love to see a "falling star" award too though - to honor those dipshits whose work was once seen as important but that we now know was built on shoddy methods and fraud. So many candidates.

Must-read from the founders of @retractionwatch.com - about 85% of science is research waste, less than 50% of preclinical cancer research is replicable, and predatory publishers thrive: science has a serious quality control problem, and we're all in trouble.

We’re collecting open-ended data on Prolific, and it has become clear to me that people are using chatGPT to answer the questions. This is so depressing. Like, is it really worth the time to copy and paste questions and answers instead of just…telling us what you think?

1/ What *are* mental disorders?

I view them as systems of biological, psychological, and social variables. Mental health problems emerge from this system, which is why system and network science are so important for better understanding and treating them.
