At a personal level two things are true at the same time
Criminalization has intended effect of deterrence - the process is the punishment - and going through legal system is always painful & draining.

Those stats are inaccurately represented in popular discourse anyway. MANY of the revolutions that are touted as examples of nonviolent success involved some amount of property destruction, reactive violence (collective acts of self defense), and unarmed violence (physical resistance without guns).
I’m very uncomfortable with people of privilege demanding PEACE in the face of state-sponsored invasions of cities by our own military.
