White people need to understand that minimizing and empathizing with your racist friends serves to gaslight and oppress their victims.
And that "something else" you usually assume is going on quickly turns against the victim to determine why they "deserved" to get hate crimed.

Dunno if I'm alone in this but I've noticed that when I encounter someone who is actually, for real, straightforwardly racist... I tend to assume there's something else going on? Like surely the answer isn't simply "they hate these people." Like they're trying to be edgy or performative.

I have seen businesses dump trash - broken office equipment, boxes of burnt-out fluorescent tubes, lots and lots of paper - near homeless encampments. Housed and wealthy people dump trash because they can get away with it and it will be blamed on the homeless.
