I'm being glib here but I'm actually very serious about this.

I'm tired of every part of culture being about competition. Everything framed in terms of winners and losers, as though life is zero sum.

It isn't. We make everything better when we see peers and friends, not enemies.
I am not in competition with anyone.
always baffles me when I see “but writers/creatives/etc. HAVE to use AI to remain competitive!”

besides AI writing being worse, there’s no evidence it gives any real advantage over not using it. you’d still have to fix all its screw ups, which takes time you could use to do it right the first time.

I tried to do something that a lot of makers do: a one-day build.
I did not complete it in one day, but I got there eventually. And thats what matters :D

I attempted to make a new project-building desk in a day. It took a liiiiittle longer than that! Infrastructure planning is bonkers, episode 33:
The new Basingstoke services will be legally only accessible to motorists, despite having a large source of potential employees just 380 metres away from the building and the route by road being much longer (and congested).

Not because it's less infrastructure. Not because you love javascript. Not because self-hosting. Not because offline.

Because it can be archived and preserved for the future.

Today is a direct consequence of:

* a society that has been poisoned by the "commentariat" stoking up division at every opportunity.
* the unthinking, binary "concerned citizen" soundbite politics of sub-rate figures giving ALL extremists legitimacy.

If one extremist feels emboldened, they all do.

Representation’s important, especially during times like now where people are marginalised and turned into scapegoats regularly.

So here’s some stuff that, while none of your business, I’ll share in case it helps anyone feeling alone:

These are unpleasant underpasses but it would take minimal investment to add lighting, surface treatments, and cctv to discourage the ne'er do wells which would make a huge difference.

We refuse to appreciate the value of walking and cycling routes because economic appraisals are rigged for cars.
Absolutely this. Heading north from the ferry towards N Tyneside and N’land (NCN10) you meet these 2 underpasses within minutes.

It’s great to celebrate the upgrades on the seafront and the C2C but it also highlights just how terrible the rest of our ‘network’ is.

The 12th annual international Gender Census 2025 is now open until at least 30th August 2025!

survey.gendercensus.com

It's for anyone whose gender (or lack thereof) isn't described by the M/F binary. It's short and easy, and results are useful in academia, business and self-advocacy.

Today in the UK, the Online Safety Act (2023) came into force. This means that social media companies are required to undertake age verification for users in the UK to see "adult content". And who decides what is and is not "adult content"? The social media companies themselves.
