Man, I am oh for two on beloved classics this week. I just gave up reading The Dragonbone Chair 3/4ths of the way through it. I kept waiting for the good part to kick in, and it never did. So many pages, so much history/backstory, so little plot or action.

If only there was a single movie, tv show, or book over the past fifty years with the basic plot of “politician orders military to do illegal thing, military does, military is left holding the bag”. I bet if someone *did* make that, it would be popular.
I would think Bradley’s reputation would have been harmed by, you know, committing a war crime, not by somebody noticing he’d committed a war crime.

I have a colleague at a Big 10 university who had a harassment campaign come after him. They removed his email addy from his profile page because of the abusive email messages.

I can imagine Mel might have requested this.

Faculty self-defense recommends this as a first step.
Her contact info has also been scrubbed from the website. This is what unpersoning looks like.

Just watched Pieces of April for the first time. I kinda feel bad that I didn’t like it more than I did, given how much people seem to love it. boxd.it/bTOz09
A ★★★ review of Pieces of April (2003)
The upside of being shot on digital in 2003 is that it gives the movie a fairly cinéma veríté feel, in that it looks very much like a home movie. The downside is it’s distracting how bad it is to actu...

First episode is out. I liked it! It’s almost all setup (of course), but in a good “I can’t wait to see how this plays out” sorta way.
I've mentioned this quietly, but - since the summer my hobby has been making this ambitious murder mystery podcast. A story. Narrated by me, with a mouthwatering cast. Partly interactive. Trailer is coming tomorrow but if you like the sound of this, please follow @murderbastard.bsky.social.

William Faulkner once said, "The 'Ode on a Grecian Urn' is worth any number of old ladies." Behold the Faulkner Scale: judging a work by how many women were stomped on to get it.

The more women, the more clarity.
When a cancelled performer reënters the culture, we expect them to offer us a great work, channelling their newfound clarity into the finest art they’ve ever made. With his new comedy show and début novel, has Louis C.K. met the bar?

Louis C.K.’s Next Chapter
In a new standup special, and a début novel, the comedian navigates murky, post-#MeToo terrain: not quite exiled, not quite welcomed back.

Oh! Speaking of flatulence! I have a new "pull my finger" gag for you to try:

Tell your closest friend you're worried you have bad breath, and ask them to sniff it.

When you breathe on them and they sniff, fart audibly. I think they'll freak.

I'd try it myself but I'm divorced for some reason

I get it but actually insurance is not like anything else we ever buy. It’s like if we paid the grocery store regularly but sometimes went three years without eating anything but a salad every six months, and then got in a car accident and needed five years worth of celery in an hour.
Imagine paying a large monthly fee to shop at a supermarket, then paying again for the actual groceries, then getting an extra charge months later because one ingredient in an item you bought came from a farmer associated with a different store.

This post is about healthcare.

My most popular holiday story is much shorter than others. Here it is in full:

Me: Huh. I’ve never had dried oranges before. This is kind of nice.

My wife: Please stop eating the potpourri.

In a 360-review at work, a coworker on another team said of me, “Men want to be him, women want to be with him” and setting aside the heteronormativity of it, I was smiling for days.
What is the best compliment you ever received? Putting aside whether or not you believed it.

There’s been a lot of talk about supporting authors on here. A great example of why (and how! The Patreon link is right there, hint hint).
26. I just posted a blog post about the past month, and how my wife was nearly killed, how I've been running around like mad, how I'm not making much progress with the new book lately.

Harry Connolly (@byharryconnolly.bsky.social) is one of my fave authors.

He needs $ help. harryjconnolly.com/17553-2/

For a good binge read, grab his completed epic fantasy trilogy The Great Way.

His "A Key, an Egg, an Unfortunate Remark" is the best standalone urban fantasy I've read.

"My library sucks! I can't afford to buy books all the time!"

*checks their TL*

*sees a bunch of discussions of movies they've seen in the theater*

*points out that a trade paperback book costs the same, or less, than most movie tickets*

*dead silence*
REMINDER: if you think your right-on lefty/socialist/communist/etc. politics justifies pirating books, well guess what? Most writers don't make a living wage from their books or writing work, and stealing from them makes you a class traitor.

I’ve started blocking on sight anyone who says shit like “bullying is good actually” and it’s made my experience here much more pleasant.

Yes, “hurt people hurt people” but they can do it elsewhere, not in my TL.
“Bullying” is bad by definition. It’s not a value neutral tool to be deployed positively toward good ends. It’s so fucked up that people want so badly to reclaim this thing, and are so eager to do it that they want to brand things that aren’t bullying as bullying.
"Some people deserve to be bullied" is always wild to see because it's so deliberately childish as to make it difficult to imagine the person saying it has the moral capacity of an adult human being.
