Y’all, I think I’ve found my niche in this little corner of the internet: embodying the highest form of intelligence while humbly engaging in the lowest form of wit. Oscar Wilde would be rolling in his grave—or slow-clapping, who knows? Either way, I’m thriving, and you’re welcome. Enjoy the show!
Wanted to be a scientist doing good things for the world but ended up as a software engineer in corporate America. Absolutely no regrets “selling out” whatsoever cuz I can actually afford to live and given what the current admin has done to science funding? Yeah it’s rough out there…
Growing up in a time when “selling out” was the most shameful thing you could do and then being forced to live through the 2020s feels like being kicked in the head by a horse every day

Reaction was the beating heart of a lot of OG "punk" stuff and why so many of the punk rock boomers went MAGA as soon as they were old enough to feel nostalgia

The original Dem demands were:
1) Permanent ACA subsidies
2) Medicaid funding restored
3) No more blank checks for the regime (rescission)

They dropped Medicaid immediately. Went silent on rescission. Cut back to 1 year of subsidies on Friday. And surrendered today.

The Senate Democrats!

pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

OpenAI is well aware of how its products stoke manic, suicidal, psychotic, and other forms of unhealthy behavior, but company leadership insists publicly that the problem with the tech is that it isn’t reaching *enough* people. Bulldozing the vulnerable is corporate strategy

When people talk about the excesses of MeToo, they have to lie, because the reality is that there was no massive social reckoning forcing people to believe survivors or hold perpetrators accountable. In fact, there has been a significant backsliding and new punishments in rejection of MeToo

This is an *amazing* level of derangement about generative AI.

We are headed for weird anti-AI purity movements where ppl turn on personal computing entirely and start LARPing as Dune mentats, because they think the magic fascism math is hiding in every transformer, search algorithm, and BART.

The actual finding here is that a huge percentage of the population believes things that are not true. Democrats objectively did not spend significant time on climate change or LGBTQ issues in the last election campaign.
Duh. Those of us on the ground last year actually speaking with middle class/working class voters and who heard from these voters every single day the same - “Trump is an asshole, but Democrats are out of touch” - could’ve saved my new political party a lot of time & money producing this “report.”👇
