The quake struck west Bandon, Oregon, just before midnight at a depth of about 6 miles. By Friday morning, the USGS reported two aftershocks, each with a magnitude of 3.0.
5.9 quake detected off Oregon Coast; no tsunami threat expected
Quakes of this magnitude are not uncommon off the coast near the Oregon and California border.
