Just a reminder: having a functional moral compass right now is going to make you feel bad all the time; don’t mistakenly hate yourself for that.

This is excellent!

Alt text of a Lisa Simpson painting with big wavy arms:
"I am comfortable with my childhood giftedness dissolving into adult mediocrity
I will focus on simple joys and developing a loving & supportive community rather than obsess over my lost sense of exceptionalism"

This reminds me of a very small slice of conversation with Miwok pyrogeologist Don Hankins, who talked about people mourning trees lost in fire bc they were used to them--but those trees hadn't evolved with the landscape. You can mourn a pocket universe for what it offered you & then let it go.
”White supremacy has taken an aneurytic pocket universe and declared it universal.” Revisiting this wonderful text from the always awesome Dr. Zoe Todd (we miss you Zoe). 🐠 🌱 🛢️

So I think the takeaway, in an era where Poilievre's Conservatives are being told not to find common ground (source: recent CBC reporting), is this:

The fundraising emails and rallies are going to paint you as radical no matter what.

So why not just do the bolder, more progressive thing anyways?

How in the world are you going to say capitalism isn’t the problem when we’ve literally managed to cause climate change and a global mass extinction in less than 500 years of it existing?

Any system that demands constant growth and consumption is unsustainable.

Note: Knowing capitalism is the core problem doesn’t mean we can’t make progress or improve people’s material conditions before we end capitalism.

We can live in reality and imagine what is possible beyond it.

People let their “this is how it is” interfere with their “this is how it should be.”

Jews, Palestinians, Anishinaabe, etc. We have a right to exist as peoples. But states? They either exist and get recognized, or they do not exist. If the US fractures into multiple states, then those states will exist. The notion that states have a "right" to exist is nonsensical.

Francesca Albanese had the most useful answer to this question.

Nation-states exist or they do not. There is no provision within International law on the right of states to exist. There IS a provision for the right of peoples to exist. So it's the wrong question.
Israel’s “right to exist,” as Edward Said wrote, is a metaphysical term that doesn’t seem to apply to any other country. Israel’s right to exist is predicated on negating the existence of Palestinians.
