Today's December Comfort Watch: Raiders of the Lost Ark, which is right now as many years from its debut as it is from the movie serials which inspired it. How has age treated Indy, and what, if anything, does he still have to teach us?

If I have any credibility with you from 20 years of reporting on rightwing & fascist movements, please listen when I beg you not to celebrate Charlie Kirk getting shot. Leave aside morality: this isn’t a match in dry grass, it’s a torch. We do not want what this could ignite & we would not win.

For anyone interested, I will be running a Mead and Cheese tasting on 31/07/2025 in Morningside, Edinburgh!

We'll be tasting our way through 5 different meads paired with selected cheeses.

I've actually learned a lot about cheese from this.

Hot take (so feel free to disregard): Centrist and liberal politicians right now react to crises by engaging in "common sense" realpolitik.

Unfortunately for them, realpolitik hinges on a consistent and shared reality. No "real" = No "politik". Maybe time to dust off those moral compasses instead?

remember this; try

if the things some people are trying look useless or stupid to you maybe they are, find something that seems smart. and keep an eye on whether or not the shit other people are trying works.
“it matters to try”

that’s everything, friends

i don’t give one gat damn if the odds are slim for any one particular action

we have to try

that’s the moral and ethical injunction for all of us living in 2025

we have to try
ok. that's all i've got.

today's democrats aren't who will liberate us in the end, but the folks nearest institutional power are the ones who can, while things are bad, most easily help hold up the falling sky & buy time.

this shit can be both "not enough" & "really matter."

it matters to try.🏳️‍⚧️💜

If anyone thought "gender criticism" was ever about women's safety:

The recent interpretations of the supreme court ruling now mean that a 6 ft man with a beard can enter the female bathrooms and claim to be "biologically female".

Are they? Who will check?

It was always just transphobia.

It was truly a meeting of opposites. On one hand, the foremost disciple of an intransigent movement of conservative fundamentalists driven by blind faith, and on the other hand, the Pope.

Something a lot of people forget, and the people of the US are finding out hard right now, is that laws are not real. In the same way that money is not real. Both are just norms that we accept to live in societies, and once they are no longer enforced, they cease to exist.

political norms are not just completely useless they are deeply harmful because they always end in the worst people acting with impunity while everyone else goes 'oh my goodness well nothing we can do that would violate the rules that don't exist really'
I mean very obviously Hegseth should resign, and if it were a Democratic administration this would be quickly be a consensus position.

This piece by @gideonrachman.bsky.social makes a helpful distinction between Trump the genius (politics eg getting elected) and Trump the moron (policies eg tariffs, invading Canada). I think it’s possible to go further and see that the moron is created by the genius.

Bleak thread …

always hated the line "the arc of history bends towards justice" cause like, do they think it bends that way under it's own weight? that the fascists get tired, see the error of their ways?

Really enjoyed the latest two BtB episodes about Louis XIV and Versailles (and the way isolation and privilege can drive people insane). I do feel there should have been more shout-outs to J-Stahl's practice of "Keep your friends close and your enemies shitfaced," though. youtu.be/wEvreLB5x_A?...
