If you want someone to plug in a random USB.

Play the long game and drop it in their box of random cables. Eventually they'll find it.

Me: The application is changed and we no longer use these DB fields. We should delete it.

Cowoker: What if we need it again! we should keep it.

2 hours of back and forth later

Honestly deleting defunct data should NOT be a contentious position.

I work with a sales focused business development manager. One of the company owners.

He half arses everything, no detail is too important to forget. No customer meeting requires preparation.

If I quit this job it will because of him

(rant) in Australia if a work Xmas party is organised at a pub. It is appropriate to inform people if it will in fact be completely outside.

I didn't think this story could get darker... Holy fuck
On May 11, 1950, while working on the Rawlins National Bank in Wyoming, a construction crew unearthed a whiskey barrel that contained a human skeleton with its skull cap sawed off & an odd pair of shoes. Dr. Lillian Heath, now in her 80s, was asked if she knew anything about it...🧵

The CSIRO funding over time tells a story.

The Wifi patent was 1992, back when the funding was 2.6 times what it is now.

Hard to do world class work when drawing straws for who turns out the lights.
'“It’s the most shortsighted lack of investment by a federal government since before the Abbott government. And they were stupid," [a former long-serving researcher at #CSIRO] said.'

Business: I feel as though the current work is taking too long
Me: We are probably a week behind where I hoped

B: How do we get this done faster
Me: What are you prepared to drop from the scope?

B: Nothing, all has to be done!
Me: More humans would eventually help
Business: No

Sometimes I see a team members going down a cul de sac.

I used to push really hard and try and prevent it. Causes a lot of friction and over time I've figured that it unusually isn't worth it.

That said... sometimes I regret not causing friction at the start. Today is one of those days #devlife

Company sales / marketing guy is doing xmas cards again! Which would be cool but he uses AI to generate them. They look AI generated.

This is at a power systems company where we do deep analytics on plant behaviour. Engineering stuff that has to work every time.

I suggest AI cards is not the flex

Frankenstein was so very well put together. Every scene was a feast.

I noticed that portrait in the film. Amazing achievement

I'm really holding out for a multi-material #3dprinter my 10 year old #Printrbot is great but wearing out (and thin).

The #Bondtech #INDX system seems very very nice. I think I'll hold off buying myself an xmas present until after I see what is announced in 4 days!

The Australian Labor government really has no opposition. Like none. They are only limited by their imagination.

They could be bold, or ruthless or something. Instead they seem afraid and meek. Afraid of what I don't know.

I wasn't confident that I would enjoy Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein. His work is amazing but the content has been covered many times.

A triumph, amazing.

Customers providing vague error descriptions is fine.

Team members should absolutely do better. Min is to:
- Write it down (slack is fine)
- URL, or describe how to get to the problem location
- Describe what is observed
- Describe what is expected

Working with a developer on a breaking change. I really think this time they understand why doing so in a non-breaking way is important and way less stressful!

TLDR sane way to build stuff
- 'expansion' (both old and new paths work) followed by
- 'contraction' (only the new path works)

Our dog just had puppies. I remember Holly and Lister discussing dog milk in Red Dwarf. After the puppies had enjoyed their fill I decided to have a sip. Not as good as regular milk but not at all bad. Lister didn't notice it was dog milk in his tea. I understand why.

What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever done? I don’t mean “cheating on your partner” stupid, I mean stupid stupid. Like, once, I had this bubble bath which smelled absolutely delicious, so I took a big glug of it. That kind of stupid. (It did not taste delicious.)

My partner came back from an Australian land and ground water (ALGA) conference with swag!

I thought this was a joke to start with but it is in fact a real playset!

My child was not as excited about it as I am.

Remote, foreign staff!

I really have to keep in mind, when asking for changes to work. I have to explicitly tell them NOT to work through the night.

I never want them to work through the night. Companies are built over years. I can count on less than 1 hand the times a day mattered.
