No kidding! It hurts the country on many levels (health of the nation, innovation, progress, the economy). It hurts global scientific progress.

In 100 days in office, US President Donald Trump has destabilized eight decades of government support for science.

This has included terminating more than 1,000 grants in areas such as climate change, cancer, and HIV prevention.

Will US science survive Trump 2.0?

Here is a list of critical federal health programs for families that they want to cut.

Without these programs families will have fewer resources to care for loved ones, young and old. Those on the edge will fall into poverty.

This is correct. NIH can’t award grants if the institutes are dismantled.

Musk and Trump get their hands off NIH or they will kill the cancer cures and economic advantages created by the US’s world-leading science enterprise.
To state the obvious, I think what we are seeing today is the actual dismantling of the NIH. At the very least, this will render certain ICs completely non-functional, which obviously is the point.

Buy, hey, study sections and council meetings are back on 🙄

This exciting resolution from Rutgers University Senate is exactly the kind of model I think higher ed needs: a mutual defense pact of, in this case, Big 10 schools. They call for member institutions to create a joint defense fund and make resources available to any member institution under attack.

"The consolidation/RIF plan pulls power away from scientists and puts it in the hands of political employees. It sets up Trump and Musk to kill NIH as an evidence-based science funder. We must stop this plan."

New contributed post on our blog: Please read.
It describes Orban and authoritarianism. 🧪
The NIH firing plan is really a radical institute merger and an authoritarian takeover
this is an Orbanization of US science: a move to exert political control over discovery, which will kill the US medical research industry and end cancer cures. The plan must be stopped. We can act.

I sincerely think that universities should suspend their productivity standards for scientists and ask them instead to hold town halls in schools, public libraries, museums, shopping malls, and anywhere else and communicate what is being lost with the collapse of the research ecosystem.

This is how our government has been corrupted:

1) Donors give huge sums to elect politicians to office.
2) Elected officials rewrite the rules in the donors' favor.
3) Donors make a huge profit.
4) Repeat.

For the sake of democracy, we must get Big Money out of politics.
