Ok, so I typed down some definitional thoughts on what makes an Influencer Intellectual so unique. I consider this my academic contribution of the year, thank you.

Influencer intellectuals, a quick summary
In my newfound condition as a part-time bureaucrat, I have dropped the ball on some of my academic projects. I’ve carved out a little bit of time in between grant applications, emails, and pa…

Ah, the wonders of the internet and people with too much idle time on their hands. Ever wondered what Midsomer County looks like? Here it is.

Sorry to bring you another episode of “I don’t want to sound like an asshole but”, but some advice for budding social theorists: if you submit a revision to a paper where you are upending everything in the field without a review memo, godspeed and good luck.

I wonder if *entire societies in hegemonic decline* don’t also soil the nest
There’s a phenomenon that parent coaches and therapists call “soiling the nest”. That’s when kids are coming of age, about to leave for college or independent living, and they start acting a fool at home. It’s a way of emotionally separating.

I’m here to tell you that adults soil the nest, too.

In general, superstars, wherever they may be, are just people who were lucky enough to extend their 15 mins of fame a little bit longer. Other than that, many are completely unremarkable
There’s a “superstar” layer at every R1 institution I’ve been at that isn’t composed of academics in any sense I recognize. They’re there so the institution can claim them, but they use the university as a launchpad to contracts and speaking engagements. They’re not teaching the intro classes.

People: we built a system that was entirely based on funding, aligning every single incentive in that direction. Are we really surprised this is how leadership responds?
MERE HOURS after the President of the United States posted an AI video of the Obama’s as monkeys, the Science Tech Action Committee (led by @aaas.org and @researchamerica.bsky.social) posted a THANK YOU to TRUMP for SIGNING THE BUDGET.

Shot. Chaser.

One of the problems of the LLM/AI debate is that 1) it is guided by an implicit theory of mind and intentionality that is indemonstrable, 2) is riddled with “all in” arguments that miss the point.

Word just erased two months of work on a chapter despite having clicked 'save' MANY times on the chapter and I just now wish everyone working at Microsoft spend the rest of eternity in hell.

Come on, a skeet is not going to resolve anything! A panel at 5 pm in a completely unfindable academic building in the middle of campus, however, might just be the silver bullet we've been looking for.
man just one or two more posts and I'm gonna fix american leftwing politics i can feel it

Take the money, name it, build it, and then rename it the Trump Sucked station
Trump aides sought to pressure Senator Chuck Schumer to help name New York’s Penn Station and Washington Dulles International Airport after President Trump in exchange for releasing billions of dollars he has frozen for a rail tunnel under the Hudson River. nyti.ms/4ajpykM

Some friendly suggestions for the @nytimes.com Editorial Board

San Diego City Council increased parking fees and reduced services to give the police department a considerable boost in budget. Great to see it’s paying off by stopping illegal operations that had a whopping $650 associated to them.

I think higher ed folks have much to learn about how automation happens, particularly because we are all workers on an assembly line where we believe we are managers…
They're not really pilots but they're always gonna be there. I like how Gray & Suri call this the last mile problem for automation. With us since the putting out process in textiles and early food factories. The question is always "who gets automated and who does the cleanup afterwards."

I am, again, slightly shocked at whoever is advising the UAW's negotiators, given all that's happening with federal funding.
