Fan of microbes 🦠 All of the pronouns. Aspiring wrecker of civilization.

I make my living as an R&D scientist, but I’m working on a novel and a garden and sometimes learning bass.
I had a dream I saw a dump truck with thousands of rocks painted as various pride flags. They were being gathered and destroyed. At first it made me very sad, then it made me think of all the people who had painted those rocks and still had that impulse in their hearts.

Quit freaking out. Remember that in 10,000 B.C., when America had ZERO international trade, a family could afford a house like this on a single income.

I inherited a nice couch from my grandparents a decade ago. Its cushions are worn out, so I’m getting new ones made. It’s distressing that doing this will cost the same as a new couch. Like I know why, economies of scale yada yada. But still. Cheaper to get a new thing than fix an old one.

Very cool work, though looks like this should be understood as a potential recycling technique rather than as a way to mitigate PFAS contaminated sites.

My kid, who has been struggling with reading, just spontaneously read the title to “Catch 22” and therefore I got to explain what a catch 22 is, and now I can die happy.

Over the course of the 12th & 13th centuries in Europe, the layout of the page in books became increasingly complex, due to changes to reading practice with the rise of scholasticism & the university. The sophisticated architecture of the page compresses an amazing amount of info into this space.

I don’t know that this is “crazy” so much as “it’s completely consistent for a bunch of billionaires who made their money contributing nothing to human welfare to dislike people who have the desire to do good in the world unconnected from the profit motive.”
The crazy thing about firing all of these federal employees is that they tend to be underpaid, super hardworking, in it for the right reasons, idealistic people who could’ve worked in industry or pharma and made way more money but they truly believed in the mission and the good they were doing.

New in PN: Musk is the autopen

"Trump is trying to undo Biden’s presidency by claiming he was too incompetent to exercise power while some shadowy figure was running things instead. The juxtaposition is jarring as we are daily confronted w/a POTUS who's vigorously, confidently *not doing his job*"
Elon Musk is the autopen
And Trump is incompetent.

Susan Crawford wins the Wisconsin Supreme Court election, according to many election analysts.

This after Elon Musk and others poured millions into anti-transgender advertisements in the state.

The anti-trans panic failed in Wisconsin.

This is a major victory for LGBTQ+ people in the state.
