This is exactly correct. When politicians attack Mamdani with lies about his policies, and twisted distortions of his record, and obvious hate speech about his faith and identity, they are opponents to be crushed. It does not matter if they have a (D) after their names.
The profound misrepresentation of Zohran’s positions (on police, Israel) and the viability/scale of his policy platform (modest tax increases for small-scale pilot programs) by Democrats and the media are what you would expect from bad faith opponents, which makes me think that's who they are.
