If you asked me what I believe is one of the biggest threats to European democracies today, I’d say it's the self-proclaimed political centre, which is either too dumb, too ignorant, or too hypocritical to admit that they themselves are constantly doing the far right’s work.

The end goal of Grok sexual harassment is to make women afraid to be visible. It’s a punishment for daring to exist in a way the perpetrators can’t control. There’s no one solution to this, because the problem isn’t just technological. It’s cultural. It’s misogyny. This is just one expression of it.

For all that the media has spent years freaking out about what social media does to our brains, I don’t understand why there appears to be little effort to grapple with the fact that these chatbots are, for some not insignificant portion of the population, literally psychosis machines

if you push the buttons on a vending machine and it spits out a coke, that doesn't mean the vending machine understood thirst
the one that shows the "apology" followed by a prompt and reply for an aggressive non-apology is more accurate imo

it conveys the reality that there is no coherent viewpoint, only text likely to follow other text. ask for insults, get insults. ask for apologies, get "i'm sorry"

just so it's clear: this is the exact core function of genAI

Fascist government and climate deniers love it because it can produce the aesthetics of knowledge without any actual tendency towards truth. It is automated denialism.

Shame on every climate scientist promoting its use (there are lots)
Bob and I were among the hundreds of researchers that were supposed to conduct the 6th U.S. National Climate Assessment. Now it looks like they're gonna produce it with a few people and Grok? Communities need rigorous and accurate information about climate change. This will put communities at risk.

Some of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing a text, writing an email, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we can’t do things we’ve been doing since the dawn of time.

I made a 4 page comic for Root & Stem about Gen-AI which is pretty funny, if I do say so.

The whole magazine is very cool, with a goal of making STEM available to remote and Indigenous communities.

Read the whole thing here:

I don't think generative #AI should be used in schools, as an "educational tool".

However, the Ministry of Education, in #Romania, certainly thinks it should.

I wrote up my personal position and translated it into English

Every prompt to chatbot software is “generate me some text.” If it generated you some text, it performed its function correctly. It never lies, it never wants anything, it’s text generating software that generates text.
Not wanting to disappoint you so much that it lies is the last quality I want in a computer.

I don't understand how anyone can watch how blatantly Grok is manipulated to answer the way ownership desires it to and then act like the other LLM chatbots couldn't possibly be similarly but less obviously compromised to produce responses in whatever way corporate interests and priorities dictate.
