There were 246 evictions filed throughout Minnesota last Friday 11/21, which is the highest rate for a single day in at least 3 years (probably longer). 74 of the cases were filed by the St. Paul Public Housing Agency.

St. Paul is wild. I observed an unattended campfire on my run along the Vento trail, & the Fire Department isn't answering their general phone number. On my way back along Phalen I was nearly hit twice by cars turning right while I had a green pedestrian walk signal. Unsurprisingly, one was a Tesla.

Yesterday the Housing & Redevelopment Authority of Duluth filed 11 evictions.
Same HRA whose director advocated against Duluth's new Repair & Deduct law (that passed with more than 2/3rd's of the vote)—calling it "a dangerous experiment," apparently due to her own biases & stereotypes about renters.

When an issue like this is either lazily or purposely framed as specifically impacting homeowners, while ignoring any impact on renters, it contributes to stereotypes about renters. Do better @startribune.com
November 17, 2025 at 7:05 PM
Apparently only homeowners are impacted by property taxes. Maybe someone at the @startribune.com wants to double-check that, please?

On my run this morning in 55412 I observed two separate instances of vehicles driving on designated walking/biking paths (1 on Victory Pkwy, 1 near Mississippi boat ramp). 🤦‍♂️

Also, access to boat ramp is closed due to construction, but someone still managed to dump a large amount of garbage there. ☹️

Thanks Dan.

St. Paul funded HOME Line at $25K from 2019-2022. Prior to that it was inconsistent, voluntary, Ward-specific $1K-$5K.

From 2023-2024 the city did not directly fund HOME Line (🤔 rent stabilization?) but did facilitate a $25K/year grant from St. Paul & MN Foundation.

Last I knew, St. Paul paid HOME Line about $25,000/yr. Meanwhile, St. Paul accounts for 14% of the hotline work, around 3k callers per year, behind only Minneapolis (25%). I promise it takes >$100k in resources to serve St. Paul. And yet DSI and council offices will just tell you to call HOME Line 🤷

Today I saw a billboard for Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity's ad campaign "Goodbye Rental. Hello, Home." Also on their website: home.tchabitat.org

Apparently if you rent your home, it's not actually a "home" in the eyes of TC Habitat. Absolutely disgusting framing coming from a housing nonprofit.

Will the Strib liveblog when people start losing housing subsidies and other benefits, or is that level of in-depth reporting only reserved for airport delays?

Duluth's so-called “Right to Repair” initiative would allow renters to pay for minor repairs and deduct the cost from their rent if landlords fail to respond. But some worry tenants could be left footing the bill. Voters decide Tuesday on Election Day.

This opinion that additional tenant rights are "a dangerous experiment" that could "harm tenants" is such a commonly repeated yet disgusting and patronizing attitude.
