@joann-trejo.bsky.social, @marymunson4.bsky.social and I have a commentary in @natcellbio.nature.com on recent attacks on DEI in biomedical research: "If scientific research, especially biomedical research, is meant to serve everyone, then it requires that everyone has an opportunity to participate"
Scaling back DEI programmes and the loss of scientific talent
Nature Cell Biology - Programmes that support diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in science are under attack in the USA. Data indicate that diversity in the scientific workforce increases...

NSF today released instructions for the next round of applicants to its Graduate Research Fellowship Program. A key group—second-year Ph.D. students—is no longer eligible, and students who are still able to apply will face an unusually narrow timeframe. https://scim.ag/3KlQkQk
‘Completely shattered.’ Changes to NSF’s graduate student fellowship spur outcry
The announcement comes months later than usual, leaving many would-be applicants stranded

This is the most anti-science thing I have watched today.
What is most shocking about this is all of these statements are being made without any scientific evidence to back it up.
There are very few safe options to treat pain and fever in pregnancy so this is also an attack on women's health.
what the hell did Tylenol ever do to this guy?

Aside from the incredibly flimsy evidence claiming a link between ASD and acetaminophen use in pregnancy, there is something remarkably cruel about effectively trying to restrict one of very few pain medications that are known to be safe in pregnancy.

Jeffrey Goldberg thinking he was being pranked and then realizing he was actually just in the war plans group chat is such a good microcosm of how it feels to be alive right now, everything seems fake until you realize it’s actually real and incredibly stupid

From an operational security perspective, this is the highest level of fuckup imaginable. These people cannot keep America safe.
The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans
U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen. I didn’t think it could be real. Then the bombs started falling.

Due to the Musk/Trump Administration’s draconian cuts, the National Science Foundation is significantly scaling back its program to provide college students with paid summer research internships. Many of my colleagues attribute their start in science to this program.

Ok on a serious note one of the reasons science is so unwelcoming to people who are socialized not to be egotistical pricks is that many scientists constantly question others competence

Like instead of saying “I don’t understand, can you explain?” during a talk they say, “that doesn’t make sense.”

The breadth and scope of cowardice amongst our scientific leadership is staggering.
SCOOP: The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, arguably the nation's most powerful scientific organization, is bending to political pressure and removing terms like "health equity" from pending reports. Members are not happy. Story by me: www.statnews.com/2025/02/20/n...
National Academies is altering pending reports to appease Trump administration, some members say
Words such as “health equity” are being replacing with vaguer terms, and 100 members sent a letter of protest to NASEM leaders.

Yesterday we shared that a pear has about 60x more formaldehyde by weight than any vaccine. Did you know your own body also produces formaldehyde naturally every day? The amount in vaccines is tiny—way less than what's already in many foods, and what your body makes during normal metabolism.

Institutions in states with red governors/AGs - Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, etc. - remain screwed

It is simply not enough for universities to say, “Our grants & research offices are looking into how research will be affected by the latest directive.”

University leaders must actively and very publicly make the case for the kind of work many of us do. The silence on this front is deafening.

Let’s stop treating "leaving academia" as negative. Scientists train for academia, industry, or what suits them. Industry isn’t an alternative; it’s a choice. In fields like engineering, most PhDs go to industry, and no one calls it "leaving academia." We should train scientists for diverse paths.
