"That can't happen here, this is America!" is basically a religious creed to many Americans at this point. It's American exceptionalism taken to it's maximal endpoint which is the idea that the American state and it's accompanying institutions is norms is somehow impervious to collapse.
The fun thing about America having centuries of unbroken institutional legitimacy is that the President can publicly say "I am doing a coup, illegally, in order to break the law for my own benefit" and 95% of people on both sides will say, "Oh no, he's not, that'd be crazy."
