A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).

we might also note that, for any institution selling alcohol, the law requires employees to:

❌️ make judgments based on appearance

❌️ preform document checks

the two things critics worry about with bathroom bans

Supermarkets don't sell booze to kids? The staff literally have to approve every sale

Next week is the last week of classes here. As I say every semester, I try and end many of my history seminars with a quote from James Baldwin that answers the question of: why take humanities courses? (Time Magazine, May 24, 1963).

You can’t tell if someone is disabled just by looking at them.

There’s no such thing as the “genuinely disabled”.

You are not entitled to a person’s entire medical history just so you can decide whether to believe them or not.

People are not faking disability, most are trying to fake being well.

To pretend all disability accommodations are like performance enhancing drugs, that will advantage all able bodied, neurotypical people, is an outright lie. I say this as a neurodivergent, chronically ill/ physically disabled teacher who has worked with disabled students for 15 years.

I think this Advent I am going to spend a fair amount of time contemplating the rather bleak truth that it's easy to do the right thing until it costs you something.

And attempting to hold that mirror up to myself, of course.

Scottish friends! I'm looking for a voice actor (roughly 30-40 years old, female) for an unannounced game✨

You definitely don't need to be an established actor, but you must be UK based with your own recording equipment.

This is a paid role, DM for brief! #voiceacting

About 15 minutes before I spoke, our rally was attacked. I'm going to write more about that separately.

I have a new piece in Central Bylines on the danger of basing policy on appearance, the wider push to restore a restrictive approach to gender, and what that means for women's rights and society as a whole. centralbylines.co.uk/society/more...
More than meets the eye: sex, gender and dangerous women
Labour's unworkable approach to policing gender means trouble for everyone – which is exactly what the real enemies of women's rights want
