Income inequality for this week's #TidyTuesday. How do countries redistribute income through taxes and transfers?

Each horizontal line represents one country, starting from market income inequality (right side) and ending at disposable income inequality after taxes and transfers (left side). The x-axis shows Gini coefficients from 0.2 to 0.7, where higher values indicate more inequality. Countries are grouped into regions: Europe with 20 countries, North America (3), Asia (2), and one each from Oceania, South America, and Africa. The lines are colored by the ratio of redistribution effectiveness, with darker colors indicating countries that achieve greater inequality reduction. Notable patterns include: Belgium achieves the most dramatic reduction, cutting inequality nearly in half from 0.49 to 0.26. In contrast, Dominican Republic shows minimal change from 0.52 to 0.52 (rounded). European countries generally show stronger redistribution effects than other regions. South Africa has both the highest initial inequality (0.71) and final inequality (0.62) despite some redistribution. Most countries reduce inequality to some degree, but the magnitude varies significantly even among countries with similar starting inequality levels.

There was a man who had invented a perpetuum mobile which worked by avoiding the second law of thermodynamics, somehow. And then, of course, there came the paper, and Bohr was obliged to write an answer. And then Bohr explained to him why it was wrong. This was simple, but I think either Klein or I, myself, suggested to Bohr that he not explain too much, because he would be sure to write a new paper, and a new letter, and Bohr would have the same trouble again. So the man actually did write a new letter and a new paper on a new machine which he had constructed, which was already more complicated than the first one. So it took considerably more time to find the mistake. Our advice was that one should simply not answer the letter, but Bohr didn’t follow the advice. So out went the second letter explaining why it was wrong. And then, of course, there came a third letter from the man saying that he was extremely sorry to waste so much of Bohr’s time, and he had completely understood what was wrong with the paper and was so grateful, but now he really had avoided the mistakes of the first two papers, and now he had found a scheme which certainly would work, and could Professor Bohr look into this, and so on. And. I think the story actually goes, but I cannot say that it’s true, up to the seventh paper of this man. Only then did Bohr stop answering.

Bluesky folks... can anyone help me figure out who this nice person is? This weekend, me eldest dropped their phone (in a waterproof pouch) in Wright's Lake, and we spent hours hunting the lake for it, only to find it at the ranger's the next day with this photo as the last photo added...

Bluesky’s user base is roughly 40% female and 60% male. While we don’t collect gender data directly, we manually sampled ~1,500 users to get a representative estimate and a separate analysis by Hootsuite came to a similar demographic split.

While Mr. Mamdani was not a target of the hack, the information about him was included in a database of millions of student applications to Columbia going back decades. The data was shared with The Times by an intermediary who goes by the name Crémieux on Substack and X and who is an academic and an opponent of affirmative action. The Times agreed to withhold his real name.
