People really don't understand what an extraordinary energy revolution China is creating right now. They're installing 1GW of solar a DAY. It's not slowing down either. They just peaked their emissions and we could see them phase out coal by the end of the decade.
In 2024, China installed 1.5x as much new solar as the entire US installed base.

Context: There was a policy change under Trump. Since 2011, ICE didn't do enforcement operations in "sensitive locations." Those would be schools, hospitals, and houses of worship. It wasn't encoded in law, but it was the normative practice for a long time. More here:

Very interesting, importance, nuanced research on public attitudes.
Overall, we find that immigration looks important in polls because it’s highly salient, not because it outranks daily concerns.

Polling captures the salience, but requires a bit of digging to see the whole picture of public priority.

Yesterday, we put out a report on the most important issues to voters.

We know that immigration now tops the traditional most important issues question (see below from @yougov.co.uk).

But that doesn't tell the full story.

Here is a rundown of the experiments we did to test this out (A THREAD):

Even though most Americans think the country is on the wrong track, they still wish for leaders who are willing to make compromises.

People are twice as like to say they prefer leaders who make compromises over those who stick to their beliefs.

I tell students they are growing up during the death throes of the Archie Bunker era, a long period of reactionary backlash to the end of Jim Crow. You can see it in these survey data and the ages of who sits in Congress. Older folks (like me) are fighting the same battles they grew up with.
