Just finished recording with the awesome @rickbell.bsky.social. All I could think while we were recording was just how cool it was to talk about history with a guy this good at what he does. Rick takes the American Revolution and fills it with awe. Pod will be out next month.

Here’s a fun NPR hit I did this week. www.boisestatepublicradio.org/show/idaho-m...
How the Underground Railroad got its name
It wasn't underground, and it wasn't a railroad, so how did one of the most notable movements for freedom in American history end up with that name?

If today’s New York Times editors had been working in London in 1888, they would’ve said Jack the Ripper was “testing societal norms“ and “straining the bounds of propriety.”

If Jesus had focused more on kitchen table issues and less on unpopular outcasts like lepers and prostitutes, he might have won more support from white working-class Judeans.

It's insane how congestion pricing in NYC has been just about *the* most unambiguously successful new policy implemented in my lifetime and still all the dumbest people in government want to get rid of it
Some stats from 100 days in on congestion pricing:
- Complaints about car-honking are down 70%
- The Holland Tunnel has 65% fewer delays at rush hour; time to get thru it is down 48%
- 6 million fewer cars
- Half as many traffic-related injuries
- 1.5 million more visitors to BIDs year over year

How Well Is Congestion Pricing Doing? Very.
One hundred days in, honking is down; bus speeds are up.
