Note for my academic friends- your University is almost certain to have a food pantry. They will make good use of your cash donation.
This, and also, create a food cupboard where you work to lower the barriers to accessing food. We just did this at our research center because, as illustrated in the thread below it's not just access to food, but efficient access to food. Having to wait in long lines makes the situation worse.
Friends, if you have the means to donate to a local food pantry financially via online giving, I highly encourage you to do that. But I don’t want to discount the importance of actually showing up at the pantry, even if it is just to drop off food. (1/5)

Go to a dental school. The private practice that I was going to when I first moved tried to swindle me and was not nice. The general practice dentistry and periodontist residents that I've been interacting with on this dental implant journey have been a godsend and amazing.
Real adulthood is asking for money for a new tooth (aka dental implant) for my birthday and Christmas this year lmao

18 year old me would’ve never thought that I’d be asking for that at 28 lol

So much of what’s wrong with our society is grounded in anti-Blackness—the governing ideology of this thing we’ve called democracy.
Let’s be clear, most EBT users are white. The reason he’s specifically lying about “weaves” and we’ve seen so many AI fakes of Black women ranting about food stamps is they need to make BW the face EBT because they know many Americans don’t care if Black people suffer, and some actually wish for it.
ROB SCHMITT: People are using SNAP benefits to get their nails done, to get their weaves and their hair. This is a really ugly program.

SEN. RON JOHNSON: That program needs to be dramatically reformed.

One tactic these data guys use online is to dismiss academic work they don’t like by calling it “overly complex” or “disconnected from reality.” I call this anti-rigor propaganda. It’s a move to sour people on serious scholarship when you don’t have better evidence.

Adam addresses it in the piece.

Dismantling the Institutional Review Board (IRB), that oversees all human subjects research, is bad. Really bad.
The entire HR department at the CDC is gone. Everyone at the IRB, which makes sure studies are conducted ethically and rigorously, and the ethics office, which oversee conflicts of interest for CDC leaders and advisory committee members, were also let go.

Just here to remind everyone that while the federal government is shutdown, all study sections at the NIH are currently on hold. Another blow to science and to early career scientists like myself with young labs and research groups. Very hard to remain positive about this career path.

What’s especially wild (legally) about this is that NSBP, NSHP, and SACNAS have always welcomed people of all backgrounds, including white people. NSHP has had a white president, my SACNAS leadership institute class has several white members, and NSBP has a sizable white membership.
Very bad: OSU unilaterally cancelled the registration of grad students attending the joint conference of the National Society of Black Physicists and the National Society of Hispanic Physicists. And OSU won't fund recruiting at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science.
