I regret to report that I did watch the inauguration because I believe in the value of examining primary sources myself. As much as I want to ignore all this, that feels like a privilege I can’t afford.

The US CDC has announced that, going forward, reported SARS-CoV-2 wastewater levels will be normalized to an endemic baseline

"Zero" on this baseline will be levels in the previous year

This awesome group is reading & reviewing small press books this year to raise the visibility of great, often overlooked presses & authors. Follow them all! go.bsky.app/E6oomtn

As a small press author it always gives me such delight to read unsung gems from other small press authors.

The response from presses has been so warm already. I am knee deep in ARCs!

Incredibly excited to be part of this exciting project! If you’re a small press or an author publishing with one, I can’t wait to read your work. 💜

They’re fine with this because *we’re* fine with this. We continue to use these shitty products.

It’s just like the airline industry, which gave us less and a more shitty experience and not only did we learned to tolerate it, we paid them more for it. Why wouldn’t any company do the same.
This really is the most succinct summation of where we are with this AI crap. The official position of the tech industry is "it's fine if everything works less well than it did five years ago and computers are belching out hate speech, so long as I can lay off a % of my human workforce."
Von Ahn worries .. a Duolingo AI tutor could go “haywire,” and start “getting into some Nazi stuff. We're prepared. Not that we have major contingency plans, but I'm prepared for it to happen. And that's okay.”

“The benefits outweigh the potential problems.”

“We cannot talk about COVID in the past tense.

“It’s still with us, it still causes acute disease and Long COVID, and it still kills.

“The world might want to forget about COVID-19, but we cannot afford to.”

All jokes aside it's really fucked up to see so many people on here celebrating murder. No one here is the judge of who deserves to live or die. That's the job of the AI algorithm the insurance company designed to maximise profits on your health and no one else

Prob not how I’d report a study that found 7.2% of kids who got Covid still hadn’t recovered two years later.

I mean come on man. It’s kids. If baby food left 7.2% of kids sick two years later, we’d be climbing the walls.
