Once you believe that empathy can be toxic or that compassion is a finite resource you're only a short distance from being able to excuse or ignore murder ... particularly when you don't agree with, understand, or identify with the victim.

This is an important and succinctly said point. Trump has NO actual beliefs. He is an empty vessel concerned only with how shiny people say his vessel is. That is why Miller, et al are actually running the government.
The only constant in Trump's politics is that he doesn't have any beliefs in the way that most of us conceptualize what "a belief" is. What he claims to believe at any moment is just what he thinks is necessary to say right then and there to gain advantage for himself.
Trump: "With that being said, you can't have guns. You can't walk in with guns. You just can't. You can't walk in with guns. You can't do that. But it's just a very unfortunate incident."
