tl;dr: Bluesky began with genuine promise: a new social media platform where users could feel safer, but inconsistent moderation quickly eroded trust.

When systemically marginalized users pushed back, Bluesky’s leadership minimized concerns and began to target them for bans.

#SVP2025 something new happened today. People know me through my papers. Either my papers are getting traction or I’ve been in the field long enough. Either way, a good way to start off a conference!

I just realised that when AI experts give warnings about AI, they’re talking about actual (hypothetical) artificial intelligence, and not the current batch of chat bots masquerading as “AI”. The latter has real world consequences that are already transpiring and have nothing to do with an apocalypse

I got off academia dot edu 5 or so years ago, when I discovered it was sending automatically-generated emails in my name without even telling me - I found out when a very senior member of the profession replied to one. It's only gone further and further done this path since, as far as I can tell.
I'm sorry, worldwide, irrevocable, non-exclusive, transferable permission to my voice and likeness? For what now? In any manner for any purpose???

This is in academia/.edu's new ToS, which you're prompted to agree to on login. Anyway I'll be jumping ship. You can find my stuff at hcommons.org.

Why isn't anyone talking about how energy pricing in the UK is tied to gas prices - and how it would be way cheaper if it reflected the actual prices, mainly sustainable energy?
