Yesterday, the Oxford Dictionary said that 'rage bait' was the word of the year.

In early October, @katiehicks.bsky.social and @kristinam.bsky.social wrote about how marketers are in to rage bait. A view is a view is a view.

Ragebait is everywhere. Should marketers lean in?
Whether brands intentionally rile up audiences or unintentionally get caught up in the culture wars, experts say they should be prepared for the consequences of short-term, bad-faith engagement.

Lol, Zillow tried to rate the climate risks facing individual properties. The real estate industry *hated* it, precisely because it worked -- it made selling risky properties more difficult. So they rebelled & Zillow caved.

Don't look up!

Russia's latest budget figures (January–October) are out, and it's becoming increasingly clear that the budget deficit will be higher than expected. After 10 months, 80% of the budget has already been spent — compared to the normal rate of 74%.

Europeans should be clear-eyed about the world we actually live in.

And be lucid about the fact that the transatlantic relationship in its old guise is gone for good.

Once you do that, then watch Max lay out the implications.
What will it take for Europe to defend itself with reduced American support?

@maxbergmann.bsky.social outlines key vulnerabilities that would be created from a withdrawal of US forces––and how Europe can work cohesively to guarantee its own security.

The exportweltmeister has been dethroned. Can anything halt the decline of German industry?

Rarmament won’t turn things around. As the FT's Storbeck notes, Germany employs fewer people building tanks than making toys.

Macroeconomic and civilian industrial policies will be vital. Some thoughts

Finished reading Fishman’s Chokepoints over the weekend. Strongly recommend as a companion piece to what's unfolding in real time with Nexperia, rare earths etc.

But a sometimes depressing reminder of how little Europe has done to become competitive or resilient in the meantime.

With few exceptions (eg the plot of Macbeth and the character of Jeeves), all Shakespeare and Wodehouse plots and characters are forgettable or contrived, which only underlines how astonishingly brilliant their language has to be to make them the greatest playwright and comic novelist in English.

I still think about when New Relic wrote a blog arguing that customers should leave vendors acquired by private equity (PE) b/c prices will go up+quality will go down. It was a stab at Sumo Logic just bought by PE.

6 months later New Relic got bought by PE...and deleted the blog
