The “problem” with vaccines? They so effective at preventing deaths that they create generations of people that question whether disease was a problem in the first place because they have never experienced the horrors of a world without vaccines.

Somebody “planted” some very unusual seeds in the roots of my patio geranium while I was on vacation.

Highlights from #BarHarbor #Maine so far include puffins, ice cream sundae served with a knife, and lots of gorgeous scenery.

A few months ago there was a TikTok trend of Gen z employees sincerely confused that older customers would ask them product questions. Someone explained that employees used to know things. Then we had to tell them about Radio Shack.

I realized they truly had no idea that things used to…work.

I'm pouring over the details of the reconciliation bill and its potentially apocalyptic effects on higher education for a short piece - it really is a five alarm fire. They're going to overhaul the student loan infrastructure as a means of anti-intellectual, resegregationist social engineering.
The federal government is telling you they cannot afford to house you, feed you, educate you or heal you — but that they do have enough resources and scale to criminalize, assault, deport and incarcerate your neighbors simply going to work or taking their kids to graduation.

A thing I find baffling is that anyone now old enough to have kids grew up in a time when it was considered uttterly normal and safe for kids to walk around the neighbornood alone, and yet we seem to have collectively determined the thing we all did as kids is now borderline child abuse.

Boomer academics: You should start publishing articles by the second year of grad school, have your monograph ready to go to press the day after you defend your dissertation, and have already won a Guggenheim for your next project before you go on the job market. Tenure requires three books.
The academic job market has changed just a bit

Also shout out to our #MBTA green line driver who was thanking the #HandsOff #Boston protesters for showing up, in between the usual exhortations to stand clear of the doors so people can get on/off the train.

My friend who was with me at the Boston protest told me how his mom was going to one in her town in Montana- she’s never been to a protest before but decided now was the time.
Man, the big huge protests in places like Boston, DC, NY, Chicago, and Minneapolis are awe-inspiring.

But my heart is gonna explode looking at these crowds of people out in tiny Maine towns and super red Alabama towns. Places where 15% of the population is on the street corner with more coming!
