Also, the number of these people who think late book returners are some sort of malicious evil mastermind people trying to screw other is also INSANE.
The number of folx who are pro-late fees is INSANE.

great job to all these media organizations misleading readers into believing the grok AI bot is in control, not the people turning the dials behind the scenes.

we’re three years into this wave of ai hype. how are they still so bad at this?

Asking an LLM to issue an apology-shaped object and thinking it is meaningful, is kind of like telling a d6 that if it rolls a 1 it means you've been accepted into quantum Valhalla and are ready to make that journey, king
January 2, 2026 at 2:15 AM
Another excellent thread on LLMs. 👇🏼🧵
LLM's produce statistically similar output to what was stolen for them to train on.

When you ask one to issue an apology, very extremely literally all it is doing, and *ever* able to do, is remix the vast vast amount of apologies stolen to train it on what an apology looks like.

The thing about the apology episode (and the child porn episode that led to it and a great deal of the "sentience" bullshit) can come down to this thing called speech acts

Basically, there are certain forms of speech that constitute action without further action
Grok can't apologize. Grok can, when prompted, generate a word sequence that is statistically similar to the colloquial phrases we think of as "apologies," but Grok cannot actually apologize because Grok isn't sentient. But we all have a lot of trouble with this because we assume sentience IS speech

And there are those who want Gen AI to make major decisions about human beings—even life-or-death ones.

When Gen AI is not a human being.

'Over the past couple of years, AI lawmaking has been busiest in the East Asia and Pacific region, in Europe and in individual US states....Meanwhile, the US federal government is bucking the trend by cancelling AI policy work and challenging state-level AI laws.'
Let 2026 be the year the world comes together for AI safety
AI technologies need to be safe and transparent. There are few, if any, benefits from being outside efforts to achieve this.

Isn’t it weird that ‘basket weaving’ became a right wing trope for fake college courses when it turns out that Basket weaving is an ancient tradition with a lot of history and there’s a huge market demand for traditionally woven baskets.

Scholars who do historical research, eat your Wheaties (or whatever else fuels you). In the year of the nation's 250th birthday, there will be all sorts of nonsense that we will counter-program with actual history.

"Lower tenure density." Last I checked (I left in 2022), 87% of TNS faculty were contingent. That's already pretty tenure-light!

And shortly before I started, in 2004, they had entire sizable pgms composed of *one* full-time administrator + a (few) dozen part-time instructors. They're reverting.
SFSU says the quiet part out loud, meanwhile The New School hides behind mission, vision, and “realignment.” A central purpose of VSP is to “lower tenure density.”

Our contract and part-time faculty, and staff will get hard and first.

SFSU offers buyouts to all tenure-track and tenured faculty
The Voluntary Separation Incentive Program is a “balancing act,” where there is a stronger incentive for tenured and tenure-track faculty to retire and open up room to hire back lecturer faculty.
