THIS is what makes my head spin: The president is not a moral figure in any idiom, any land, any culture, any subculture. I'm not talking about the liberal enlightenment that would make him want the country to take care of the poor and sick. I mean he has no Republican values either. He has no honor among thieves, no cosa nostra loyalty, no Southern code against cheating or lying, none of the openness of New York, rectitude of Boston, expressiveness and kindness of California, no evangelical family values, no Protestant work ethic. No Catholic moral seriousness, no sense of contrition or gratitude. No Jewish moral and intellectual precision, sense of history. He doesn't care about the life of the mind OR the life of the senses. He is not mandarin, not committed to inquiry or justice, not hospitable. He is not proper. He is not a bon vivant who loves to eat, drink, laugh. There's nothing he would die for - not American values, obviously, but not the land of Russia or his wife or young son. He has some hollow success creeds from Norman Vincent Peale, but Peale was obsessed with fair-dealing and a Presbyterian pastor; Trump has no fairness or piety. He's not sentimental; no affection for dogs or babies. No love for mothers, "the common man"" veterans. He has no sense of military valor, and is openly a coward about war. He would have sorely lacked the pagan beauty and capacity to fight required in ancient Greece. He doesn't care about his wife or wives; he is a philanderer but he's not a romantic hero with great love for women and sex. He commands loyalty and labor from his children not because he loves them, even; he seems almost to hate them — and if one of them slipped it would be terrifying. He does no philanthropy. He doesn't - in a more secular key - even seem to have a sense of his enlightened self-interest enough to shake Angela Merkel's hand. Doesn't even affect a love for the arts, like most rich New Yorkers. He doesn't live and die by aesthetics and health practices like some fascists; he's very ugly and barely mammalian. Am I missing an obscure moral system to which he so much as nods? Also are there other people, living or dead, like him?

1) Prof. Scheibenbogen announced that the biopharma company Sanofi is willing to support a drug trial on ME/CFS led by the Charité.

Sanofi also expressed an interest in gaining a better understanding of the disease and its mechanisms.

2) Not entirely sure which drug this refers to, but Scheibenbogen previously talked about doing a trial targeting plasma cells that produce antibodies, so it could be Isatuximab (which targets the cell marker CD38, the same as Daratumumab).

Thanks - I feel the same way about Britain. It's where I'm from and there's a lot to like about it, but the UK has made some really stupid choices this century, particularly austerity and Brexit. And it's the same forces that want to undermine democracy and make way for kleptocracy, in Poland or UK.

I’m Polish and I am immensely proud of the progress my country has made. A bit anxious of the Brexit virus spreading, aided by Russian influence on Polish far right.
Also, I live in the UK, and am deeply saddened by the self inflicted decline of such a brilliant country.

Ik ben als Longcovid patiënt afhankelijk van dit medicijn, maar het wordt nu niet vergoed.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is characterized by elevated levels of immunoglobulin G (IgG), altered bowel habits, and increased pain sensitivity, suggesting immune dysregulation, but the exact mechanism remains unclear. Here, we found that FMS-IgG binds to mast cells in a MRGPRX2/b2-dependent manner, leading to mast cell recruitment and IL-6 secretion. Transferring serum-IgG from FMS patients to mice induced FMS-like symptoms and increased skin mast cells, indicating that FMS-IgG acts through mast cell activation. The ablation of mice Mrgprb2 mast cells or deleting Mrgprb2 receptors prevented IgG-induced heightened sensitivity to mechanical and cold stimuli. Stimulating human LAD2 cells with FMS IgG elicited MRGPRX2-dependent IL-6 production. Consistent with mice findings, mast cell density and tryptase levels increased in human FMS skin samples compared to healthy controls. The RECOVER-NEURO clinical trial found that “cognitive rehabilitation” failed in treating Long COVID. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) study included 328 people who underwent interventions of either online cognitive training (computer games), a cognitive rehabilitation program, or received electric currents on their heads, called transcranial direct current stimulation. The 10-week study used a type of scale that measures neurodegenerative disease as a primary end point and found no significant improvements across all interventions. When it was announced in 2023, the study was heavily criticized by people with Long COVID, and has been called a waste of funding that could have been used to trial pharmaceutical interventions. Scientists are revealing more about microclots and Long COVID. A recent study in the Journal of Medical Virology found a strong association between microclots and net-like structures that some white blood cells (called neutrophils) release to attack pathogens, known as neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). Researchers assessed the blood of 50 people with Long COVID and compared those samples with blood from controls, finding more, and larger, microclots in people with Long COVID. The authors concluded that biomarkers for blood clotting and related inflammation and cardiac issues could be used to study Long COVID. A study about myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) was retracted by the journal Food Science and Nutrition. The study claimed that “dietary choices can potentially mitigate the syndrome,” stating that eating cheese protected people from ME, while eating peppers or “having an affinity for breakfast” contributed to ME. Some research commentators have applauded the decision, stating it is rare for poor studies on ME to be retracted.

1) Reading this review on fatigue in other diseases: it's notable how it manifests early in the illness (often before diagnosis), how it's often poorly explained (correlates poorly with pathology markers), yet is reported to be one of the most disabling symptoms.
