One definite advantage of old-fashioned diesel trains is that the rumble of the motor helps to drown out the sound of someone scrolling TikTok vids.

Okay everybody! Please help me with this! Universities everywhere are increasingly awful, so let's put together some New Year's Resolutions to help them get better! I'll start!

1) Stand up for the importance of good education for good lives for people, society, and planet.

While I think George Osborne's tenure as Chancellor of the Exchequer was mostly awful, he did (to his credit) overrule other people who wished to cancel Crossrail.

The UK Treasury simply does not sufficiently understand the value of public infrastructure.

Having a 1 hour+ commute is never worth it. I don't care how much extra money you earn or how many podcasts you listen to on the way. Spending such a significant portion of your life simply going to and from work is a waste of life.

I *love* this street transformation in Edmonton, Alberta.

I visited it under construction almost two years ago but more progress is visible in Google Street View.

The NHS is under pressure to adopt Palantir software.

Palantir’s founder openly despises the NHS.

You can push back – use our tool to see if your local trust is using the software, then send an email to say no to Palantir

“Several years later, my wife rides everywhere: to physio, to shopping, to restaurants, to doctor appointments, to the park — everywhere. She tucks her cane into her panniers. That’s important, because walking far still hurts. And cycling keeps us active and moving, which is important as one ages.”
Comment: How Victoria’s bike and roll network changed my life
Even if you, or your friends, don’t use the safe bike and roll network, there are thousands and thousands of your neighbours that do.

Cycling and walking could help deliver almost everything Brits say they want to achieve in 2026 — if we design streets to support them.

Getting fitter, losing weight, being healthier, saving money; enabling active travel quietly does all of it. With no gym contracts.

In-car touchscreens turn out to be distracting. Quelle surprise!

Car ergonomics have been designed over decades to be easy to use...and then car makers spoil it all by sticking it all on a huge ruddy screen :(
New research finds that car touchscreens are so distracting that they induce "significant performance degradation" among drivers.

Meanwhile, in-vehicle touchscreens remain completely unregulated in the US.

Every time I see someone with a bike on a BART escalator, it makes me smile - especially this rider prepared for rain.

Not all policy making is so visible & tangible.

Two years after we started allowing bikes on escalators, it’s worked perfectly. I haven’t heard complaints or of any big accidents.
