Good morning new followers!

My name is Derek, I live in Edmonton and work for a progressive political party

You won’t see much of politics here though, I mostly use this account as a bit of an escape!

I’ll be posting about the things that bring me joy: comics, D&D, my dog, pop culture

The fascinating replies to this fine question have taught me how I passionately HATE the word “Literature”. I loathe it. I’ve encountered SO much snobbery tied up with that one word. Into the Mariana Trench with it. Replace it with, say, “stories”: “English Stories”. “World Stories”. That’ll do me.
Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

Third time I’ve bought a trade collection of these Hawkman issues

Showcase was black & white, the middle collection is from 1989 and is colour but just the first handful of issues, and finally the new DC Finest collection

So @ryannorth.ca, was the Littlest Hobo theme song playing while you writing Krypto?

This is why I play Ellington and Crosby and Fitzgerald etc. during my labs, and make it clear that I neither grew up with this music nor was alive for its release. My hope is that they will internalize this lesson and come to appreciate their generational equivalents, such as The Bloodhound Gang.
Of the many ways to arrange people into “there are two kinds” camps I’ve always found “interested in the world pre-themself” and “not” as a particularly useful split.

Telling myself that paying down debt is just as satisfying as buying new things is exactly as convincing as telling myself that broccoli tastes as good as candy

But I am telling myself it…

Marcus drew a little sketch in every trade I brought (and I brought a stack), it was great. Pictured are Gambit, Jubilee, and Betsy Braddock in some Excalibur books, plus Huntress from her New 52 miniseries.

What if I got really into Star Wars comics?
This is all from the last few months thanks to Bookoutlet deals, I’ve only dabbled a bit before

It’s just a random line from an ad I get on my podcasts, but “the BBQ is lit but there’s no meat to grill” is my new favourite folksy metaphor

I had happened to collect the trades of Dan Jurgens run on Thor just as @warrocketajax.com started their “Jurgies into Mystery” and decided to read along with them

This run is the epitome of “everyone’s got ideas, it’s the writing that matters”. One interesting idea after another, poorly executed

I'll never get over how the best line in all of noir – "I've got eight slugs in me. One's lead, and the rest are bourbon" – doesn't come from Raymond Chandler or Dashiell Hammett, but Calvin and Hobbes

Failed at mushroom hunting but the dog found an exciting patch of “deer” fur to roll in. I thought it was as so cute! Must be a bedding spot for them!!

My dad: that’s not deer, thats from a moose rolling all the ticks off. Check your dog for ticks now

While I'm talking TV shows with long seasons -- 'My Name is Earl' holds up surprisingly well. It's so funny, and the music is MIND-BLOWING. Jaime Pressly gives a Lucille Ball-level performance.

If you play #DnD or any other fantasy #ttprg, I can't recommend these Fantasy minis enough. The original series, from Blacklist games, were indestructible, had amazing variety, and were cheap as dirt.

WildSpire is producing series 2 now, and you can get the original series too, again for dirt cheap

Next work in progress is to get this amazing DM screen painted.
It’s got 2 built in dice towers, and the hex grid on the back allows you to attach all kinds of accessories like mini holders, pen trays, and a bunch more

Red Claw Gaming in north side Edmonton is such a great little business.
I got an airbrush kit for Christmas to paint minis, and I went in to buy supplies.. and they actually sent me elsewhere! They recommended a different shop that they're friendly with and told me they do air brush stuff better

when people say this they imagine, like, artisanal carpentry or baking, not eight hours on the manufacturing line adjusting a thousand widgets because you're marginally cheaper than a machine
Making stuff with your hands is objectively good. Not many people can make a living doing in our current world.
