HBO Max added 30 classic crime films in Nov — from proto-noirs like THE PUBLIC ENEMY (1931) to essentials like OUT OF THE PAST (1947).
Including their Criterion titles, they now have nearly 100 pre-1960 noirs.
There’s even a dedicated #Noirvember section. (New adds in alt text.) #FilmSky #FilmNoir

Hitchhiker’s was huge when Danny Roth recommended it in 6th grade, before Python or the Goons or even the Beatles. Zora’s memoir made me fall in love with a dead woman. And T.R. Pearson’s first 3, when I found them in my 20s, away from home, were a godsend. Well, not a GODsend. But still.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!
tell me about a book that changed you
for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

Other households have their own irregular grammar, right? Like “pyjame” as past tense of “has their pyjamas on” but “be-pyj’d” as present tense of same? Right? Or have we gone full Joyce here and there’s no coming back from the Joycity?

This spineless lummox would weep uncontrollably, shit his pants twice*, and give away the fake nuclear codes they've given him (without even being asked) within 90 seconds of even the vaguest threat to his life.

Saying “reading books in public is performative” is a very quick and simple way to communicate to me that you are a stupid little pig I do not need to listen to and in that sense I appreciate it

Taking a moment to contemplate the formative effect (on me, anyway) of Jim Dale’s Doc Terminus. Because it helps me put aside how upsetting my wife finds my (startlingly accurate) Helen Reddy impression is.

I’ll say this every time but if *anything* should be easy to reject it’s the very idea of the phrase “the appeal of Kim

agreeing to make a terrible deal while your main opponent is quite literally being boo'd on live tv by an entire stadium of people is the kind of political instinct you'd normally only find in a 3 week old dead goldfish
