Unsolicited writing advice: no. 8075: There is no such thing as serious writing. There are only writers who take their work seriously, and those who don’t. Tragedy is no more “serious” than comedy. Children’s writing is no less “serious” than writing for adults. Good writing is wherever you find it.

For Rob Weinert-Kendt—who recently saw all 5 plays in the 2025 Contemporary American Theater Festival—the only U.S. gathering of its kind that fully stages all its offerings is high-stakes, forward-looking, and in a fascinating environment.

Today is World Emoji Day apparently, so what finer way to celebrate than with this sensitive and poignant translation of W.H. Auden’s ‘Funeral Blues’ into emoji.

when im really sad i like to watch british crime television, because there are only like a dozen actors total. it’s comforting, like going to a dinner party with all your friends and four of them are nicola walker.

So much American use of the Britishism “sex pest” when “predator” is both correct and so much more effective.

The loudest shouts of the night so far are for Diana Ross, whose 18-foot train is embroidered with the name of her kids and grandkids. “Legend!” one person shouted. Another: “You can’t hurry love!”

I went to the Tate Modern yesterday. In the Rothko room with all the Serious Art Connoisseurs there was a ~5 year old kid who walked up to each painting, pointed at it and shouted 'RECTANGLE' at each one in turn, then left the room.
