The president are what? This White House don’t hire spokespeople who write correct.

Temporary like the other emergency Supreme Court rulings on presidential powers this year, but a 6-3 majority, with 3 of the conservatives—Roberts, Barrett, Kavanaugh—joining the 3 liberals against Trump’s authoritarian overreach.

Good.

As for understandable doubts about economic stats: seems impossible for Trump to rig them. GDP is reported by the 500-employee BEA, with a director appointed in 2022. Job-wage-inflation stats are from BLS, whose boss now was the #2 last 11 years, 2,000 employees. Both are career fed statisticians.

The key facts here beyond the headline:
• grocery prices (meat, poultry, bread, cereal, coffee) going up a lot
• “Most of the strength is coming from wealthier households” spending on travel, restaurants, luxuries — Oxford Economics chief economist
• corporate profits way up, $166B Q3 vs $6.8B Q2

The news coverage every day—exposing our corrupt authoritarian regime that gives only cynical lip service to America’s revolutionary founding principles—reminded me the article we did in Spy in 1989. Kind of prescient. 1/2

The most flagrantly, grotesquely corrupt American in history.

In just one year, $2 billion from big donors mostly now benefiting financially.

Pius the Trumps’ direct personal $3 or $4 billion payoff haul so far—real estate deals from Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Qatar, crypto boondoggles, etc.

I’m all in for economic populism and Zohran Mamdani.

But I can’t help noting: this collection of portraits of Democratic Socialists of America leaders and elected officials at a conference this month really does look like the cast of a Portlandia reboot. www.nytimes.com/2025/12/21/o...

Good and true piece.

This latest cycle of vibe-shift swings, from Peak Woke (2020-21) through the anti-woke backlash of Peak MAGA (2024-25), was remarkably fast. Rhymes with the 1967-1980 left-right lurches. Except that then the right won actual landslide mandates and didn’t insanely overreach.

Remarkable, fascinating story in @AirMail.news I knew nothing about. Far-right black MAGA conspiracy kook Candace Owens is married to far-right Bridesheady Oxford son of a British Lord.

I already felt positively toward Democratic Senate candidate @grahamformaine.bsky.social. Listening to his conversation with David Remnick on the @NewYorker.com podcast turned me into an enthusiastic Graham Platner supporter.

Huh, wonder what it was about Stefanie that just never clicked with Trump. Because he hires and steadfastly supports plenty of other women, such as his HHS secretary, attorney general, key U.S. attorney, and director of national intelligence.

Just finished The Lowdown, the series created by Sterlin Harjo starring Ethan Hawke on FX. Might be my favorite show of 2025. What a remarkable run Hawke’s had the last nine years, great performances in great things—First Reformed, The Good Lord Bird, Blue Moon, now this. Bravo.

Serious question/suggestion. The press (and normal people) refer to billionaire allies of Russia’s corrupt autocratic president as oligarchs. Shouldn’t the U.S. press call the politically influential billionaire media allies of the would-be autocratic U.S. president—Musk, Bezos, Ellison—oligarchs?

Before the Brown shooting, a stranger in a classroom building bathroom strikes you as wrongly dressed for the 37° weather. You exchange a glance. Then you follow the guy outside, around the block, eventually ask, “Your car’s back there, why are you circling the block?”

Tipster is a freak, right?

I’d known nothing of liberal political bigwig Patrick Gaspard until hearing him today on @timmiler.bsky.social’s terrific podcast. Now I love him. So smart and wise. Especially recommend listening to him on his advisee Zohran Mamdani from around 25:00 to 44:00. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t...
