New: The Trump administration has struck a deal with the state of Missouri to end the SAVE Plan — the most affordable plan available to working class borrowers.

Much to say here, but tangible advice: do not voluntarily withdraw from the SAVE plan right now.

Trump administration strikes deal to end Biden’s student loan repayment plan
A settlement between the Trump administration and seven states could soon end the Save program that lowered payments and offered quicker loan cancellation.

This makes facially neutral policies--like poll taxes and literacy tests--that we know were adopted for discriminatory purposes legal. Organizations can now simply claim there was no discriminatory intent regardless of outcome. It's unconstrained institutionalized racism.

That moment when a student puts things together from the readings that I didn’t see or foresee. That’s everything.

Good morning! I’m currently at Beaverton High School in OR where a mass student walk out has just started to demand a proactive ICE protocol for their school and district.

Students say that similar walkouts were planned at multiple other high schools, including Aloha, Sunset, Southridge & more.

I just got a "Decomputing" talk accepted by a very tech-focused business conference (as a Keynote even) and a labor rights organization who wanted me to propose a talk instantly went for the "The Luddites were right" suggestion. Two things that a few months ago would not have been possible I think.

My sense now is that a conversation we need to be having across various technological regimes is what intentional opting out looks like in a social form where opting in to various tools is compulsory or coerced.

Luddites, frame-breakers, Captain Swing rioters, women amassing in Manchester streets to demand potatoes (e.g. 1812)— all these were organized countermovements to a gathering universal commodification, c. 1750-1840. For that reason they call out now for our closest & most sympathetic form of study
Something I’ve encountered a lot lately is misperception of Luddites as technophobic reactionaries motivated by ignorance & resentment, rather than what they were, part of a well-informed labor movement seeking to seize control of means of production.

I’m so old, I remember when National Review was pro-states rights and local control…though states rights to do what, we may ask. bsky.app/profile/seth...
In 1958 Bill Buckley was desperate to find more subscribers for his fledgling “conservative” magazine. And so he reached out to the White Citizens Councils (which had formed to oppose Brown v Board) to get their mailing list. Hunting where the anti-14th Amendment ducks were.

A useful summary for showing there are no universal values here, that liberty, democracy, cooperation, etc, are irrelevant to the vision and policy plan

To the extent that 'the West' or 'civilisation' have any meaning, it's mere white identitarianism

I don't consider the Supreme Court to be legitimate. I also know that the Democratic party is not up to the challenge of disempowering the court so the illegitimate court will continue to exist for years to come. Folks will have to figure out how to move with this in mind.

Or better yet: make GenAI about an assault on civics. Because if you are selling a product that necessarily attempts to con one person into believing they are engaging with another person when they are not, you’re not just ruining education. You’re dismantling society’s foundations in social trust.

Framing GenAI as a battle between teachers and students is a red herring. Students and educators are on the same side. The real opposition are the data extraction firms and brokerages and their allies among the managerial class.
