In 1958 Bill Buckley was desperate to find more subscribers for his fledgling “conservative” magazine. And so he reached out to the White Citizens Councils (which had formed to oppose Brown v Board) to get their mailing list. Hunting where the anti-14th Amendment ducks were.
July 28, 1958 1999 Dear Mr. McFadden: I am thoroughly ashamed of myself. The fact is that I clean forgot about writing you in zeference to blis business of our out-of-State subscription list. Immediately after I talked with you by telephone the other day, I spoke with our Executive Vice-President, who in turn made inquiry of the Cirmlation Department. It appears that it would be almost impossible to isolate the out-of-State subscribers to either The News Leader of The Times-Dispatch, These things are li-worked by some sort of train route classification, which includes both Virginia subacribers and out-of-State subscribers on down the line, and it is not possible simply to push a button labelled "Indiana" and have a machine cough up the names and addresses of 22 subscribers in Indiana. I should have passed this information on to you a couple of weeks ago, and I'm awfully sorry that it slipped my mind. I did write Bill Buckley, however, on the matter of the Citizens' Council mailing list. As I told him, Bill Simmons visited me here in Richmond in late June or early July, and volunteered to get together with you folke on some mutually acceptable plan. I believe he told me that he has upwards of 60, 000 names on his mailing list, and he has no objection to making these available to you. Obviously, however, this is a matter for you to work out directly with him. My suggestion would be that you write him at 1014 Plasa Building, Jackson, Mississippl, and see what might be arranged.
