The books-without-pictures that male audiences *are* still reading in their hundreds of thousands tend to be escapist. Thrillers, detective stories, SFF. This is just the nature of a down economy. People have plenty of grim realism in real life. Peak Male Lit corresponded to Peak Economy (1950s-90s)
