Brand new on Dirty Feed: what happens when The Dick Van Dyke Show starts questioning its own worth.

Spoiler: it decides it’s pretty good, actually.

Camera doesn’t do it justice, but this is the red sun through the smoke haze over the western suburbs of Brisbane today.

The Charitable Trust

Film is Fabulous! is a charitable trust with a board of trustees responsible for legal oversight. They work with a panel of advisors to ensure the trust’s primary objectives are met, and vulnerable films preserved.

I got to speak to Harry Vanda, abd while I can’t say out got much out of him (and I got even less out of Mark McEntee) he is still the last surviving Easybeat, thank you very much, and almost never does interviews with anyone* www.theguardian.com/music/2025/o...

I have a piece in this weekend’s Observer in which I use the legendary Apache Indian to take down the definitely not legendary Robert Jenrick

Change your tune, Jenrick. For integration, look no furth...
Growing up in diverse Birmingham defined my world view. What other city could have inspired Apache Indian’s mash-up?

I was listening to an old Casey Kasem American Top 40 (I find this soothing these days) from 1985 where he told the story of Wendy Carlos, who scored The Shining and Tron, and her journey to becoming trans. Casey got all the pronouns right and it was presented as a slice of life, feel good story
Cool tip: it actually takes MORE effort to deliberately misgender someone AND it marks you as a total asshole! Pretty cool!

I endorse this policy - in a completely objective, unbiased and obviously truthful way.

Learning music rewires your brain to understand larger patterns, faster (as well learning how to train your brain to learn other things). It also lets you be a clown in a good way, which the world needs more of

A key difference here is that while either can be incorrect, the structure of Wikipedia *creates context* and the structure of LLMs *destroys context*

Wikipedia has linked sources and an edit history showing where information came from and who added it when

An LLM just generates text
Some of the anti-AI stuff feels a bit like when people would say "don't use Wikipedia as a source." It's just like anything else, a piece of information that you weigh against multiple sources and your own understanding of its likely failure modes

Holy shit. This guy saved a PNG to a bird.

(he drew a bird into a spectrogram, played that sound to a starling, and the starling reproduced it back to him with enough accuracy he got his bird drawing back in their call's spectrogram) www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCQC...

A great story about a Brisbane music institution, and the time it was targeted by Queensland’s morals crusaders in the 80s.

I remember in that brief window between hearing Blackstar and then the news of his death, marvelling how he was still making exciting music and wondering where this new direction might lead. After the news it felt like a completely different album; still beautiful but a farewell not a new start.
Hot take: Blackstar is Bowie’s greatest album. Not just a farewell—his boldest artistic leap. Agree or argue? Let’s hear it.

OK, this is wild.

In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.

It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.

What the HELL?
