My ultimate concern about Trump is his apparent inability to view human beings as anything more than units of potential production. A voter, a Venezuelan fisherman, a golf club, a McDouble, or a B2 bomber. It doesn't matter. If it served his maligned ego, it is good. If not, it is disgusting.
Trump: "Beautiful B2 bombers. Aren't they beautiful now? We respect them so much. What a job they did. That in an instant completely obliterated Iran's nuclear capability, of which we've just ordered -- I have to say -- many more of the updated versions of that incredible piece of art."

Maybe someone who is more capable of speaking to this can help me out, but it seems like the US military will end up being the last line of defense against fascism in America. What are the odds that eventuality bends away from authoritarianism? A $130M private wage payment does not bode well.

One of the superpowers of literature is its transpositional powers. You can be anywhere or anyone for a moment. Reading builds empathetic 'muscle.' It has the added benefit of being quiet and solitary in a time of overconnection.

Literary fiction is a magical tool humans created in order to experience things outside their approximate sensory range. Meaning, if you find yourself knowing little about, say, Iran, you could pick up this book and gain some insight. One could, presumably, empathize with people they have never met.
